Golden West League co-champion Ocean View High advanced to the
quarterfinal round of the CIF-Southern Section Division III playoffs
Tuesday after rolling past visiting Nogales, 12-4, in a second-round
game.
Ocean View will travel to top-seed Crespi of Encino on Friday for
a quarterfinal showdown at 3:15 p.m.
Nogales led, 1-0, after two innings and again at 4-1 through 3
1/2 innings. But the Seahawks took control in the bottom-half of the
fourth inning when they erupted for six runs.
“Even when we were down 4-1, there was no letdown in our kids,”
Ocean View Coach Aaron Kavanagh said. “They knew they could come back
and that six-run inning really got us going. We just added on, from
there.”
The big hits in the six-run inning came from Brett Burda and Jeff
Roth, each of whom clubbed a two-run home run.
It was the first career home run for Burda, Kavanagh said.
Ocean View tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to
up its lead to 11-4.
Roth drove in four runs, overall, and Ocean View racked up 16 hits
off three Nogales pitchers.
Bear Wurts also had another productive game. The senior first
basemen went three for three with an RBI and three runs scored.
“Bear had another big game for us,” Kavanagh said. “He’s our
catalyst.”
John Vega doubled with an RBI for the Seahawks.
The pitching win went to junior Robert Purpura, who overcame early
jitters to complete six innings.
During his time on the mound, Purpura struck out eight.
He was relieved in the seventh by senior Joe Jameson, who held the
Nobles scoreless in their final at-bat.
“I’d call his performance gutsy,” Kavanagh said of Purpura. “He’s
got good stuff. All he needs to do is learn to relax a bit more. He
came back nicely, though, after that rough start.”
In Division I baseball second-round playoff action Tuesday,
defending champion Marina was eliminated by host Long Beach Wilson,
9-6, and Sunset League champion Huntington Beach had its season ended
by host Arlington, which squeezed out a 3-2 victory.
In first-round CIF-SS baseball action, Ocean View rode a
complete-game effort by junior Jeff Roth to down host Sonora, 4-1.
Roth, who limited the Raiders to five hits in improving to 7-2,
also had three hits on offense, including an RBI single in the sixth.
Derek Walsh’ home run in the second inning had given Ocean View a
1-0 lead. In the sixth, Robert Purpura’s single drove in two more
runs.
Huntington Beach began the playoffs with a 1-0 first-round home
victory over visiting Redlands.
Ace Colin Balester didn’t allow a walk and struck out 11 for the
Oilers, who scored their only run in the fourth inning when Hank
Conger came home on a balk.
Marina began defense of its Division I title with a 9-1 pounding
of visiting Redlands East Valley.
The Vikings, who led just 1-0 through three innings, blew the game
open with an eight-run fourth inning.
The win went to starter Brandon Parillo, who ran his record to
9-2.
Parillo also had two of the Vikings’ seven hits.
In CIF Division I softball action, visiting Marina saw its season
come to an end in a 1-0 loss to Rosary, which scored the game’s lone
run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Marina earned a first-round date with the Royals by defeating Long
Beach Wilson, 2-1, in a wildcard game.
