Pirates outlast Dodgers in 10 innings, 4-3

Nick Mazzone doubled home Tyler Kerns in the 10th inning to lift the
Pirates past the Dodgers, 4-3, in Majors Division play at Huntington
Valley Little League.
Kerns had doubled prior to Mazzone’s game-winning hit.
Hits by Alex Talbert and Josh Huffstettler led to three other
Pirates runs.
Bradley Schultz had a two-run double and Sam Colton had an RBI
single for the Dodgers.
In other games:
A’s 2, Angels 1
Richard Varella and Nick Miller shared pitching responsibilities
and sparked the A’s past the Angels.
The A’s took an early lead when Bennett Allen scored on a hit by
Varella, and Nick Miller doubled home another run for a 2-0 lead.
The Angels’ run came on an RBI single by Matt Steinhaus.
Garrett Keadle, Dillon Petrarca and Steinhaus pitched a strong
game for the Halos.
Diamondbacks 9, Braves 1
The pitching of Nevin Valles, Kyle Macloed and Scott Martin
limited the Braves to one run.
The D-backs scored their first run off back-to-back doubles by Ben
Hunt and Martin.
Hits by Ben Hunt and Michael Pellegrino led to another run in the
third inning. In the fourth, hits by Macleod, Billy Hopkins, Daniel
Uberin Luke Holler, Christian Miller and Valles allowed the D-backs
to take control of the game.
The Braves’ lone run came on a double by Brett Hornstein followed
by a single by Dane Delaney.
At Ocean View Little League:
Cubs 5, Giants 1
Sean Guite pitched a complete game, striking out 13 as the Cubs
beat the Giants.
The Cubs struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning on
a walk to Jason Fernandez, a double by Guite, an RBI single by Jordan
Miller and an RBI groundout by Cody Wilkinson.
It was 2-1, Cubs, in the bottom of the fifth inning when they
broke the game open.
Montana Merhoff and Nathan Sapia singled and with two out, Ian
Anderson hit a booming triple to right center to drive in two runs.
Anderson then scored on an overthrow to third and the Cubs extended
their lead to 5-1.
Guite aided his cause with a pair of doubles.
Miles Beran doubled for the Giants.
Indians 5, Yankees 4
The Indians completed a three-game season sweep of the Yankees by
winning this eight-inning affair.
Tom Cosgrove’s first hit of the season drove home Scot Bailey with
the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Bailey had led off the inning with a single and was moved to third
base when Elijah Brown got his first hit of the season.
Mark Johnston, starting pitcher for the Yankees, turned in a
strong offensive game with a single, double and triple.
Cubs 5, Marlins 2
Jordan Miller allowed just one hit in five innings pitched for the
Cubs.
With the Marlins leading 1-0 after their first at-bat, the Cubs
scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead
for good.
Jason Fernandez walked, Sean Guite lined a single to right before
Fernandez scored on a wild pitch. Miller singled, Guite scored on a
wild pitch, and Calvin Primich tripled to center to score Miller.
Primich also scored in the inning.
In the second inning the Cubs scored their final run on a walk to
Fernandez and a double by Miller.
Also contributing hits for the Cubs were Jacob Conroy with two
singles and Cody Wilkinson with a single.
The Cubs received strong defensive support from Guite, Fernandez,
Conroy, Primich, Miller and Ian Anderson.
Cameron Mahdad and Alden Matthews had hits for the Marlins.
