Teen takes life in hotel after prom
A Huntington Beach High School student committed suicide Friday
night at a hotel party following his high school prom, officials
said.
Christopher Davidson, 18, was with his 16-year-old girlfriend and
about 100 other students at a party at the Residence Inn in the 800
block of W. Baker Street in Costa Mesa, Costa Mesa Police Lt. John
FitzPatrick said. Following a fight with his girlfriend and friends,
Davidson locked himself in the bathroom.
“Somebody poured beer on him and some sort of altercation took
place in the courtyard, then he went into his hotel room,”
FitzPatrick said.
His girlfriend told police that she thought he had gone in to
clean up, but grew concerned when he didn’t return.
Friends later kicked open the door and found that Davidson had
hung himself.
“He had some issues and had been depressed,” FitzPatrick said. “He
was on antidepressants.”
FitzPatrick said he did not know if Davidson had been drinking or
what kind of antidepressants he had been prescribed. Some types of
antidepressants have been linked to an increased risk of suicide.
Parents rented 11 rooms for students at the hotel, FitzPatrick
said. Some were reportedly drinking and possibly doing drugs, he
said.
“We need to be vigilant of the activities we are condoning,” he
said. “Teenagers tend to push the edge of the envelope anyway.”
Shots reported fired in neighborhood
Heil Avenue residents were awakened by gunfire early Friday
morning.
Police received multiple calls from residents about the gunshots
at 2:49 a.m. No one was injured. Police confirmed shots were fired
when they found shell casings on the ground and saw that car windows
and tires had ben shot out, Sgt. Dave Bunetta said.
Police have only sketchy information on the crime . Based on calls
to police, as many as eight rounds may have been fired. No
description of the shooter or motive for the crime are available. The
suspect may have been in a gray BMW, and a resident reported hearing
screeching tires after the shooting, police said.
Argument grows into alleged assault
A local man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly
weapon after reportedly hitting another man over the head with a
glass bottle at a restaurant.
The attack was reported at 11:55 p.m. Friday at Crabby Kenny’s on
Main Street, police said. Police believe Edward C. Barela, 35, of
Huntington Beach attacked Silvio Bolanos, 35, of Irvine after an
argument became violent. Police believe the confrontation between the
men erupted after Bolanos had a conversation with Barela’s sister.
Police arrested Barela, Sgt. Dave Bunetta said. Bolanos suffered
injuries described as serious but not life threatening, and was
treated and released at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach.
Hearing delayed for murder suspect
The arraignment for murder suspect John Steadman Nilsen has been
continued for the second time. The proceeding was rescheduled for
June 24.
Nilsen is also charged with armed robbery, and was arrested in
March on suspicion of killing Shawna Wolfgram, a 19-year-old clerk,
during a hold up at the 99 Cents Only Store on Beach Boulevard in
January.
