Santa Ana CC’s Towersey wins senior amateur

Marianne Towersey shot a three-day total of 8-over-par 224 (75-74-75)
on the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses near Monterey to claim
the California senior women’s amateur championship for the second
time in three years Wednesday.
The 20-time women’s club champion at Santa Ana Country Club bested
good friend Sandy Woodruff, the defending senior women’s amateur
champion, by 11 strokes.
Sage eliminated in playoffs
* BASEBALL: The Sage Hill School baseball team ended its season
with an 8-5 loss to host Calvary Chapel of Murrieta in the first
round of the CIF Southern Section Division V playoffs Friday.
Sage Hill (14-8), which had its 10-game winning streak snapped,
nearly rallied in the seventh with three runs. Calvary (17-6) scored
six runs in the fifth, breaking away from a 2-2 tie.

Sea Kings ousted
* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team’s historic
postseason run proved to be short-lived as the Sea Kings lost, 9-1,
to host Culver City in the first round of the CIF Southern Section
Division IV playoffs Friday.
Culver City (20-7) outhit the Sea Kings, 11-4. Corona del Mar
(17-9) committed four errors.
The Sea Kings, who feature five freshman starters, recorded its
first CIF playoff win Wednesday, when they defeated Mary Star of the
Sea, 5-2, in the wild-card round. Corona del Mar won its final four
regular-season games, including two 11-inning victories over Calvary
Chapel of Santa Ana in the same week to grab third place in the
Pacific Coast League.
UCI trails in Ore.
* GOLF: In the NCAA men’s golf West regional at Crosswater at
Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., New Mexico holds the team lead
after 36 holes with a 6-under total of 570, one shot ahead of UCLA in
the 27-team field as the final round will be played Saturday.
UC Irvine is in 24th place at 614 after the first two rounds. Long
Beach State is tied for 21st at 606 and UC Riverside is tied for 13th
at 590.
After the first two days of play, the Anteaters’ Will Park is 72nd
at 151 (75-76), Jay Choe is in 82nd at 152 (75-77), Neno Boonyaplanun
is 107th at 155 (75-80), Vinnie Poncino is 113th at 156 (78-78) and
Derek Uyesaka is 128th at 160 (80-80).
