Eagles sweep Ocean View

The Estancia High boys volleyball team swept visiting Ocean View,
25-13, 25-22, 25-19, to clinch sole possession of the Golden West
League title. The Eagles (23-6, 12-0 in league) have swept every
league opponent they have faced this year.
Coach Tracey Ingraham said tough serves and hard hitting were the
keys to Estancia’s win. Scott Sankey had 12 kills, Kris Hartwell had
nine and Josh Kornegay six to lead the Estancia attack.
Trevor Holmes finished with 29 assists in the match and Brad
Larsen had seven service aces and 11 digs for the Eagles, who will
wait for CIF Southern Section playoff pairings to be announced
Monday.
Sage athletes set records
* TRACK AND FIELD: The Sage Hill School boys track and field team
came in second at the Academy League championships Friday with 131
points. St. Margaret’s was first with 161.
Braden Barnett set a meet record with a 47-6 1/2 mark in the shot
put and also claimed top honors in the discus with a 123-5 1/2
showing. Barnett also finished second in the 100 meters (11.4). Zach
Chandy tripled for the Lightning, winning the 100 (11.2), 200 (22.4) and 400 (52.1). Chandy was also the anchor on the first-place 1,600
relay team (3:40.1), running his 400 meters in a blistering 47.8.
The Sage Hill girls improved from last year’s last-place finish to
a fourth place this year with 70 points. Laura Gordon set a league
record in the triple jump (34-4 1/4) and was first in the 100-hurdles
(17.1) for the Lightning. Amy Werblin in the discus throw (83-10) was
the only other Sage Hill individual winner.
Sea Kings cruise to win
* BASEBALL: The suspense ended early Friday as Corona del Mar High
scored seven runs in the first two innings while Sea King starter and
winner Blake Contant was sharp for four innings as CdM defeated
visiting Calvary Chapel, 9-3, in Pacific Coast League baseball
action.
The PCL champion Sea Kings (18-5, 13-0 in league and ranked No. 3
in CIF Southern Section Division IV), are expected to be seeded in
the upcoming playoffs. They collected 11 singles out of their 13
hits, led by Tyler Lance (2 for 4 with three RBIs) and Jake Lemmerman
(2 for 4 with two RBIs). Josh Bradbury and Barrett Sprowl also had
two hits each for Corona del Mar. Contant gave up two hits in four
innings.
OCC duo advances
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College doubles tandem of sophomores
Sabrina Tanamal and Leah Becker advanced to today’s quarterfinals of
the state women’s tennis championships at Monterey Country Club in
Palm Desert.
Tanamal and Becker defeated Molly McGuire and Kristi Brock from
Fresno, 6-0, 7-5, in Friday’s Round of 16. The quarterfinal is
scheduled at 8 a.m., with the winner advancing to today’s semifinals.
Sage clinches CIF berth
* BASEBALL: The Sage Hill School baseball team clinched at least
third place in the Academy League with an 11-3 league win at St.
Margaret’s Friday.
Matt Loper went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and struck out six in five
innings to earn the pitching victory as well for the Lightning (12-7,
9-4 in league).
Jordan Salinger was 4 for 5 with two doubles and one RBI for the
winners, who enter the final week one game behind second-place
Capistrano Valley Christian, which they play Tuesday at Sage and
Thursday at CVC.
Tars bat around in 1st
* BASEBALL: Newport Harbor sent 10 batters to the plate in the
decisive first inning of the Sailors’ 9-3 Sea View League baseball
victory over host Laguna Hills Friday.
Greg Miner went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to
lead Newport (13-10, 7-6 in the Sea View League). Also having solid
days at the plate for the Tars were Taylor Young (3 for 5, two runs
scored, one RBI), Mike McLean (3 for 4, one RBI) and Matt Erickson (2
for 3, one RBI).
Patrick Keehan (3-2) scattered four hits over six innings and
induced two double plays, while McLean came on in the seventh and
forced the third Laguna double play to end the game.
Mesa rolls over Eagles
* BASEBALL: Costa Mesa High (12-10, 6-4 in league) rode eight
extra-base hits, including three doubles by Andrew Sanford and a
three-run home run by Gary Gonzalez, to a 15-3 Golden West League win
over visiting crosstown rival Estancia (3-18, 0-10) Friday.
Sanford went 4 for 4 with four RBIs and Gonzalez scored three runs
to back starting pitcher Daniel Cooper, who improved to 5-4 with
eight strikeouts and one walk in five innings.
Mesa scored eight in the second inning and five more in the fourth
to claim the perpetual Paul Troxel Trophy that goes to the annual
Mesa-Estancia series winner.
Big inning for Mesa
* SOFTBALL: The Costa Mesa High softball team exploded for 16 runs
in the fourth inning en route to a 20-2 thumping of visiting Estancia
in a Golden West League game that was stopped midway through the
fifth inning.
Danielle Morton went 3 for 3 with two RBIs in the fourth inning
alone to help start the Mesa (8-15, 4-6 in league) onslaught. Jane-E
Yamamoto and Ellen Rose both hit three-run doubles in the fourth for
the Mustangs.
Cosa Mesa Coach Sharon Uhl said she thought the 16-run inning is a
school record. Uhl also said that the team is fourth in league and
has a shot for an at-large bid despite forfeiting three league games.
Costa Mesa plays at Westminster Monday and Santa Ana Wednesday.
UCI holds off Mustangs
* BASEBALL: UC Irvine junior right-hander Brett Smith scattered
seven hits in 6 2/3 innings and freshman Blair Erickson earned his
national-best 14th save as the Anteaters held off host Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo, 6-5, in Big West Conference baseball action Friday.
All nine spots in the lineup contributed to UCI’s 10-hit attack as the Anteaters improved to 29-13-1, 6-7 in conference.
