Sage Hill School junior Matt Loper earned two pitching wins, helping
lead the Lightning baseball team to a fifth-place finish in the Sage
Hill Spring Classic Friday.
Tim Wilkins went 2 for 4 and produced the game-winning RBI with a
two-out single in the seventh inning for Sage Hill’s 6-5, fifth-place
semifinal win over Viewpoint of Calabasas. Jordan Salinger, Matt
Kornswiet, Zack Shockley, Bryan Kornswiet and Zach Milder each had a
2-for-3 performance, leading the Lightning (6-7) to an 11-1 victory
over Western Christian.
Michael Morgan provided an RBI double that started Sage Hill’s
six-run fourth.
Carey baffles Mustangs
* Westminster pitcher Robert Carey went the distance Friday and
delivered a 5-1 victory over Costa Mesa in a Golden West League
matchup. Carey had control throughout the game, striking out 10
batters without allowing a walk.
“He threw as well as anybody has against us all season,” Costa
Mesa Coach Doug Deats said. “He was dominating.”
Westminster (11-8-1, 4-2 league) received a jolt of offense in the
fourth inning when junior Brian Gump belted a two-run home run to
give the Lions a 4-0 lead. Costa Mesa (8-9, 3-3) responded in the
bottom of the inning when Daniel Cooper scored on Andrew Sanford’s
single to right field. Sanford, who went 2-2, was the only Mustang
with multiple hits in the game. The junior also stole a base.
Wolverines shut out Tars
* Newport Harbor High was unable to find an answer for the hot
bats of Aliso Niguel Friday in a 7-0 loss. The Wolverines (11-7, 6-1
league) scored three in the second inning, sparked by a two-run home
run by junior David Ruiz. Joshua Jackson hit a solo homer in the
third inning and Andrew Ross knocked a dinger in the fifth.
Newport Harbor (9-7, 3-4) was lead by junior Greg Miner, who went
2-3 with a double.
Eagles leave 7 on base
* Estancia High baseball coach Jon Green said his team could not
come with a big hit in the Eagles’ 6-0 Golden West League loss to
host Orange Friday.
The Eagles (2-13, 0-6 in league), who host Los Amigos Wednesday,
left seven stranded. Cullen Crom went 2 for 3 and Eric Scheafer had a
double.
