Dawn of new era for Angels

J.D. Dawn stole home after reaching base on an error for the game’s
lone run as the Angels defeated the Mariners, 1-0, to begin the
Newport Beach Little League Majors Division season Feb. 28.
The game was a rematch of last year’s division championship, won
by the Mariners, 4-0.
Strong pitching and defense dominated the game.
Jamie Heinecke and Nick Flamson combined on a four-hitter for the
Angels while John Doering threw six innings of no-hit ball for the
Mariners.
The Mariners had multiple scoring opportunities, but the Angels
made the plays. Flamson threw out a runner trying to score.
Blake Thomsen, David Weiland and Armani Ferrante each made solid
defensive plays for the Angels.
Nick Curci, J.D. Abbott and Doering had hits for the Mariners.
In Newport Harbor Baseball Association Mustang action:
* D’backs 8, A’s 6
The Diamondbacks opened the season with an 8-6 victory over the
A’s Feb. 29 in NHBA Mustang Division action.
Brett Parker allowed no earned runs in three innings on the mound
while slamming a home run and double at the plate.
Fritz Howser hit a bases-loaded triple and made a game-saving play
at first base.
Blake Pinder allowed one run on one hit in two innings on the bump
for the A’s while Daniel Albert pitched the final two innings,
allowing no runs and one hit.
* Yankees 12, Cardinals 9
The Yankees took a 9-1 lead, but the Cardinals made it close at
the end.
Jake Stowell, Nick Sargeant, James Jarvis and Tommy Hennessy had
hits and RBIs for the Yankees while Blake Bell, Christopher Sheppard,
Landon Gyulay and Tyler Kielne led the pitching.
Matthew Carpenter, Daniel Razzano and Troy Arnold led the
Cardinals.
