Love’s old sweet song

Last weekend’s Daily Pilot’s offered stories from the far ends of

love’s lovely spectrum.

At one side, there was the opening of the long-awaited (or much

feared, have your pick) opening of Vegas, the new, decidedly non-O.C.

nightclub in the basement of 1901 Newport. It came with glitter, a

giant martini glass and a grand VIP seating area. It looked to be the

perfect place to find that last-minute valentine.

At the other were the Beckmans. They’re two of Costa Mesa’s

finest, police officers who found each other on the job and managed

to keep it a secret from all their fellow officers, for one and a

half years no less, until they scheduled overlapping vacations for

their honeymoon. Then they had to spill the beans.

Readers got their pick: Slinky outfits versus crisp blue uniforms.

A full dance floor versus a full booking room. Post-collegiates

dancing in the dark versus a couple who kept colleagues in the dark.

It was a love-filled weekend, indeed.
