Locals begin bids for CIF crown

The CIF Southern Section winter playoffs begin in full force this
week in boys and girls basketball and soccer and in girls water polo.
The action continues today, Friday and Saturday with first- and
second-round games.
Thirteen prep teams have received postseason bids.
Today in girls’ water polo at 3:15 p.m., Huntington Beach, the
third-place team out of the Sunset League, travels to Long Beach
Wilson for a first-round Division I match.
The Bruins are champions of the Moore League.
Tonight at 7:30 p.m., Edison and Marina will open play in the
Division I-A girls’ basketball playoffs, while Ocean View begins play
in Division III-AA.
Ocean View, winner of the Golden West League title, hosts John
Glenn High, the No. 4 team out of the Suburban League.
Edison, co-champion along with Esperanza of the Sunset League, is
at home to take on Pasadena.
The Bulldogs are the No. 3 team from the Pacific League.
“We don’t know too much about Pasadena, other than they are a good
team,” Edison Coach Corey Kelly said. “We’re playing well as we enter
the playoffs. The girls seem to be very focused and we will take this
tournament one game at a time.”
Marina, meanwhile, will carry the Sunset League’s No. 3 entry into
its first-round game at Pacific View League champion Oxnard.
First-round games in the boys soccer playoffs will be played
Friday at 3 p.m.
Edison, which won the Sunset League title, entertains Bishop
Montgomery in a Division I match.
The Chargers earned the division’s No. 2 seed; the Knights are an
at-large entry from the Serra League.
In Division III play, Golden West League runner-up Ocean View
hosts La Mirada, the No. 2 team from the Suburban League.
Friday at 7:30 p.m., two local teams begin play in the boys
basketball playoffs.
Golden West League champion Ocean View will host the winner of
Wednesday’s first-round game between Alemany and Mountain View in a
Division III-AA game.
Ocean View had received a first-round bye and automatically
advanced to the second-round.
The Seahawks are the division’s No. 2 seed, behind top-ranked
Santa Margarita.
Marina, the No. 3 entry from the Sunset League, goes on the road
to face San Antonio League runner-up West Covina in a Division I-A
clash.
Two other locals, Edison and Huntington Beach, both received
at-large bids and opened the Division II-AA playoffs in Wednesday’s
wild-card round.
Edison played at Newport Harbor, the No. 3 team from the Sea View
League.
Huntington played at La Mirada, the No. 4 team out of the Suburban
League.
The Chargers and Oilers were two of 13 teams to receive Division
II-AA at-large bids.
Three local hopefuls begin their quests for a CIF championship
Saturday when first-round games in girls soccer playoffs commence at
3 p.m.
In Division I action, Edison, which finished second in the Sunset
League, hosts Long Beach Millikan, the No. 3 team from the Moore
League, and Huntington, an at-large entry from the Sunset League, is
at Sea View League champion Aliso Niguel.
Edison is the No. 3 seed in the division.
In a Division III first-round game, Ocean View, runner-up in the
Golden West League, is at Suburban League No. 2 La Mirada.
