Surfing is one of the easiest sports to photograph. The backgrounds

and foregrounds are clean and uncluttered; the light is usually good

and the plane of focus changes very little. The only problem is when

the ocean doesn’t cooperate and it goes flat.

This was one of those days, with tiny, inconsistent, gutless surf.

It’s very difficult for surfers to generate any speed or power in

these conditions, so there was very little to shoot.

However, I noticed this one surfer, Josh Hoyer, who was extremely

light on his feet and consistently able to find speed when other

competitors were floundering a bit. He found a good section on the

wave, threw a nice arc of spray and I had my shot.
