Viking even score with Esperanza

Nearly one month ago, Marina High opened the Sunset League boys’
basketball race with a loss at Esperanza.
Last Friday, the Vikings evened the score with the Aztecs -- in a
big way.
With five players scoring in double figures, Marina rolled from
start to finish and romped past the visiting Aztecs, 88-65, as the
second half of league play got underway.
Marina led by 14 points at halftime and never was challenged in
the second half.
The victory moved the Vikings into a second-place tie with
Esperanza in the league standings. Both teams were just one game
behind league-leader Los Alamitos prior to Wednesday’s games.
Matt Brennan’s 19 points led all scorers.
James Lambert contributed 17 points, Jeff Rivera scored 16,
Stephen Becker had 14 points and Jeff DeLaunay scored 11 for the
Vikings.
Huntington Beach went on the road and whipped Fountain Valley,
52-34, in Sunset play.
The Oilers limited the Barons to just three points in the second
quarter, and only five points in the third quarter.
Denis Abando’s 16 points topped Huntington.
Eric Ruziecki scored 14 points and Brandon McLaughlin finished
with 12 points.
Edison fell to host Los Alamitos, 54-42, as the Griffins pulled
away from a three-point halftime advantage.
T.J. Lipold scored 13 points, Alex Wright scored nine and Pat
Feducia added eight points for the Chargers.
In Golden West League boys’ action, Ocean View cruised past host
Costa Mesa, 68-27.
Nick Kosearas scored 10 points to go along with four rebounds and
a pair of steals, Bear Wurts scored 11 points and Greg Okwudibonye
had 10 points to lead 13 Seahawks who hit the scoring column.
Ocean View also drilled Estancia, 83-54, with Matt Sargeant
topping the Seahawks with 24 points.
Wurts scored 20, Okwudibonye scored 18 and Clint Amberry scored 10
points.
The Seahawks hit eight, three-point baskets in the game with
Sargeant and Okwudibonye each hitting three.
In girls’ basketball, Edison remained undefeated in Sunset League
play with a 45-28 home win over Los Alamitos.
Rebecca Kepilino led the Chargers with 21 points and Jessica
Harris chipped in 10 points.
Huntington Beach was shaded by visiting Fountain Valley, 43-42.
The Oilers’ Katia Hadj-Hamou led all scorers with 14 points.
Marina fell to Esperanza, 52-25. Lindsey Schultze’s 11 points led
the Vikings.
In boys’ soccer, Edison remained unbeaten and atop the Sunset
League standings by scoring late to edge Los Alamitos, 2-1, on the
road.
Jared Balbas’ goal proved to be the winning goal for the Chargers.
Ed Cholakian scored Edison’s first goal.
In girls’ soccer, Los Alamitos handed Edison its first Sunset
League defeat, 1-0, in a battle between top of the top teams in
CIF-Southern Section Division I.
