Walker’s hat trick leads Newport Harbor

Senior Joel Walker scored a hat trick to lead the Newport Harbor High

boys soccer team to a 4-0 Sea View League victory over visiting Aliso

Niguel Wednesday.

Walker scored Newport’s first three goals, the first coming

unassisted and the other two on assists from Matt Tracy and Will

Guzman. Tracy also scored, putting away a deflection from a Walker

shot. Newport goalie Taylor Carver anchored the Sailors’ defense with

five saves. Midfielders Guzman and Warren Junowich also provided key

contributions for the Sailors (8-4, 1-1 in league), Newport Coach

Ryan Hernandez said.

Aliso dropped to 4-5-4, 0-1-1.

Garey leads Pirates

* BASKETBALL: Sophomore guard Jason Garey scored 34 points,

including seven three-pointers, to lead the visiting Orange Coast

College men’s basketball team to an 85-77 Orange Empire Conference

victory over rival Golden West Wednesday.

Garey was 7 for 12 from behind the three-point line. Joseph

Nwabuzor (16 points) and Aaron Bobik (13) also contributed to the

Pirates’ come-from-behind win. OCC (4-11, 1-2 in conference) overcame

a 36-29 halftime deficit.

Charles Blount’s 24 points led the Rustlers (1-12, 0-3).

OCC stuffs Rustlers

* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team

held host Golden West to 37% shooting and Aliso Carrillo scored a

game-high 20 points as the Pirates defeated the Rustlers, 60-52, in

Orange Empire Conference action Wednesday.

Despite committing 20 turnovers, the Pirates (9-8, 2-1 in

conference) still came out on top, thanks in part to Amy Shaw, who

scored nine points on three three-pointers. Golden West (10-5, 2-1)

outrebounded OCC, 39-30. Tisha Gray, an Estancia High product, scored

13 points for the Rustlers.

CdM wins league opener

* WATER POLO: Jordan Anae scored three goals to help lead the

Corona del Mar High girls water polo team to a 9-4 Pacific Coast

League-opening victory over visiting Laguna Beach Wednesday.

Camille Hewko and Katya Eadington added two goals each, while

Vivian Liao and Katie Kubas scored one each. Liao also recorded four

steals and Amy Strack had three steals, while goalie Brittany Fullen

stuffed nine shots for CdM (5-6), the defending PCL champion.

Saints knock off Eagles

* BASKETBALL: Estancia High’s boys basketball team held a

one-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but allowed 23 points in

the final period in a 72-64 loss to host Santa Ana in a Golden West

League game Wednesday.

Carlos Pinto and Hugo Escobedo each had 11 points to lead the

Eagles (10-8, 2-2). Estancia meets rival Costa Mesa Friday at 7 p.m.

Aliso knocks down Tars

* BASKETBALL: Aliso Niguel’s Mike Roll hit a back-breaking

three-pointer with just over one minute remaining to give the

Wolverines a 64-61 Sea View League boys basketball victory over host

Newport Harbor High Wednesday.

Roll’s shot gave Aliso Niguel (10-8, 1-1 in league) a 63-59 lead.

Rafael Mouradyan cut into the deficit for the Sailors (10-7, 1-1)

with a layup with 29 seconds remaining. But the Wolverines made one

of two foul shots with 12 seconds left and a last-second, three-point

attempt by the Sailors went long.

Mouradyan finished with 14 points, Brett Perrine added 18 and

Taylor Young chipped in with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

* BASKETBALL: Costa Mesa High’s boys basketball squad had a

nine-point halftime lead, but allowed 37 points over the final two

quarters after giving up just 16 in the first half and Orange pulled

off a Golden West League upset with a 53-42 victory.

Jeff Waldron led the Mustangs (10-7, 1-2) with 14 points and eight

rebounds. Mesa will clash with rival Estancia Friday at 7 p.m., at

home.

UCLA sweeps UC Irvine

* TENNIS: UCLA, ranked seventh nationally, swept UC Irvine’s men’s

tennis team in the opening match of the season for both teams

Wednesday at the L.A. Tennis Center in Los Angeles.

Jon Endrikat and Brian Morton, a Corona del Mar High grad, ranked

sixth in men’s doubles, were upset by the UCLA duo of Krzystof Kwinta

and Alberto Francis, ranked 36th.

The Anteaters return to the court on Jan. 23 against Pepperine.

CdM, Titans go scoreless

* SOCCER: Corona del Mar High’s boys soccer team outshot visiting

Tesoro, 18-6, but couldn’t find the back of the net in a Pacific

Coast League contest that ended in a 0-0 tie Wednesday.

Tesoro’s goalkeeper made a diving save of a shot inside the

18-yard box from Nick Ossipoff in the first half after midfielders

Julien Cerutti and Jeritt Thayer each made strong passes, CdM Coach

Pat Callaghan said.

Callaghan said Tesoro focused mainly on defense, using only one

forward.

Shane Collins stood out on defense for CdM (6-2-5, 1-0-1 in

league) while goalkeeper Jay Zimmerman made six saves.

CdM travels to face University at 3:15 p.m. Friday.

Panthers edge Mustangs

* SOCCER: Costa Mesa High’s boys soccer coach Eugene Day praised

the way his team played despite losing to visiting Orange, 1-0, in a

Golden West League game Wednesday.

“That was the most complete game we’ve played in awhile,” Day

said.

Sweeper Willmer Hernandez played well while goalkeeper Eric Vargas

made three saves for Mesa (0-11, 0-5 in league).

Mesa’s best scoring chance came when Francisco Estrada took a

crossing pass and fired a shot that hit the goalkeeper’s face in the

50th minute, Day said.

Alfonso Pineda’s shot from the 18-yard box sailed wide in the

final minutes.

Mesa hosts Estancia at 3 p.m. Friday.

Eagles lose 2nd straight

* WATER POLO: The Estancia High girls water polo team did not

score in the first half and lost, 5-2, to Golden West League host

Saddleback Wednesday.

Saddleback outscored Estancia, 4-0, in the first half. Britta

Pitti and Carolina Barnes scored one goal each. Katie Mahan recorded

four saves for the Eagles (7-3, 1-2 in league).

Estancia hosts Pacifica Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Point Loma edges Lions

* BASKETBALL: Brian Kim scored 24 points, but the host Vanguard

University men’s basketball team committed two turnovers in the final

minute, allowing Point Loma to escape with a 58-54 Golden State

Athletic Conference victory Tuesday. Point Loma’s Andrew Lasker tied

Kim with 24 points, including five of the Sea Lions’ final six

points. Vanguard falls to 8-8 (2-4 in the GSAC).

Mesa Pony sign-ups

* BASEBALL: The Costa Mesa Pony League will hold sign-ups for the

spring 2004 season on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Costa Mesa High

in front of the main gym.

Tryouts will be held Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. to noon on the varsity

baseball field at Costa Mesa High.

The Pony division is for players ages 13 and 14. Fees are $125 per

Passing leagues forming

* FOOTBALL: Players are needed for five-man, all-passing football

leagues in Costa Mesa.

Evening and weekend leagues begin play later this month.

Teams that qualify for the playoffs will compete against teams
