Chargers perfect season rolls on

The Edison boys’ soccer team notched its 11th victory Monday and
remained unbeaten by shutting out Santa Ana, 2-0, to win the Mustang
Invitational Championships Cup at Trabuco Hills High.
Brandon Plummer’s rebound goal broke a scoreless game early in the
second half, and Kyle Sarria added an insurance goal late when he
scored off a Matt Blank feed to secure the victory.
Edison had reached the title match by recording another shutout,
this one a 3-0 victory over Saddleback, in semifinal round play. A.J.
Benton, Sarria and Blank all scored goals for the Chargers, with Ed
Cholakian, Jordan Joseph and Brandon Plummer each getting an assist.
Overall, the Chargers defense recorded three tournament shutouts
and they outscored their four opponents, 10-2.
Edison’s previous tournament victories came over Santa Ana Valley
(4-2) and Capistrano Valley (1-0).
Edison sweeper Hemseh Abdelmuti was named tournament MVP and
Plummer and Benton were named all-tournament.
The boys’ championship was the second of two titles won by Edison
in holiday tournament play.
In girls’ soccer, Edison won the South Torrance Tournament
championship by beating Etiwanda, 4-1, in the title match. Brianne
Wahrenbrock scored twice, Amanda Draeger and Christina Graham each
scored once and Draeger added an assist for the Chargers.
In other boys’ soccer action, the title of the Marina Holiday
Tournament went to Esperanza, which defeated Fountain Valley, 1-0,
Monday in an all-Sunset League final. In earlier tournament play,
Huntington Beach edged host Marina, 1-0. Also at the tournament,
Huntington defeated Long Beach Wilson, 3-1, and Marina shut out St.
John Bosco, 1-0.
In girls’ basketball, Edison held off a late charge by Capistrano
Valley to edge the Cougars, 38-37, in Monday’s fifth-place
consolation semifinal round action at the Larry Doyle Orange County
Championships at Marina High.
Valerie Katayama scored six of her game-high 15 points in the final two minutes and Rebecca Kepilino scored seven of her 11 points
in the final quarter to lead the Chargers.
In earlier championship quarterfinal round play, Edison fell to
Hart, 56-43. Kepilino and Katayama each hit four, 3-point field goals
for Edison and finished with 19 and 12 points, respectively.
Edison opened the tournament with a 45-38 win over Aliso Niguel.
Kepilino’s 15 points and 12 by Katayama again led the Chargers.
Also Monday, El Dorado pulled away to a 54-46 win over Marina in
consolation semifinal round play. Erin Barney scored 11 points for
the Vikings.
In previous consolation quarterfinal play, Marina routed San
Gabriel, 70-36, behind Lindsey Schultze’s 16 points and 10 by Allison
Budzinski.
Schultze hit four, 3-point baskets for the Vikings.
At the Costa Mesa Winter Classic Monday, Huntington Beach got 13
points from Katia Hadj-Hamou and a strong effort from its defense to
record a 40-29 victory over Calvary Chapel in a fifth-place semifinal
round game.
The Oilers had opened tournament play with a 46-13 romp past La
Quinta, as Hadj-Hamou scored 11 points.
At the Santana Tournament Monday in San Diego, Ocean View was
defeated in championship semifinal round action by El Capitan, 65-58.
Previously, the Seahawks had posted a 42-34 tournament win over
Sonora. D.J. Butler scored 19 points to lead all scorers.
In boys’ basketball, Ocean View was a 69-56 winner Monday over
Poway in third-round action at the Torrey Pines Holiday Prep Classic.
Matt Sargeant scored 19 points, Greg Okwudibonye scored 17 and Clint
Amberry added nine to pace the Seahawks in scoring.
Earlier, Ocean View fell to University of San Diego, 74-61, in a
second-round game. Sargeant’s 27 points topped the Seahawks, who
earlier had defeated Long Beach Jordan, 92-69, in tournament play.
Sargeant hit five of Ocean View’s seven 3-point shots and finished
with 21 points, Greg Okwudibonye had a game-high 24 and Clint Amberry
finished with 16 points in the Jordan win.
In pool play at the Katella Klassic, Buena Park rallied to edge
Huntington Beach, 53-51. Brandon McLaughlin scored a game-high 24
points and Brandon O’Bryan scored 13 for the Oilers.
In earlier pool play, Huntington downed Bolsa Grande, 53-44,
getting 12 points from McLaughlin, 11 from Ricky Fugnetti and 10 from
Eric Ruziecki.
On the island of Maui Monday, Marina needed overtime to defeat
Radford, 77-74, at the Punahou Tournament. Matt Brennan and Stephen
Becker powered the Vikings with 26 and 24 points, respectively.
In a first-round game, Marina ripped Barrington of Hawaii, 72-44.
Nine Vikings hit the scoring column, led by Becker’s 15 points and 10 from James Lambert.
At the RCA Holiday Tournament Monday at Orlando, Fla., Edison
routed Academy Charter of New Jersey, 99-42. The hot-shooting
Chargers were led by Jeff Golden’s 20 points, 13 by T.J. Lipold and
12 by Anthony Reid.
