Laguna Beach High’s boys’ basketball team evened its record at 2-2
Tuesday by defeating Saddleback, 58-44, in a consolation round game
of the Aztec Classic at La Quinta High.
The Breakers took command of the game in the second quarter, where
they outscored the Roadrunners, 25-11, to wipe out a two-point
deficit after one quarter of play.
Ivan Kovacevic’s 15 points paced Laguna and freshman Cheyne Martin
also hit double figures with 12 points.
Bobby Marquette hit both of Laguna’s three-point baskets and
finished wit six points.
Spencer Willhoit scored eight points, Taylor Willhoit scored six,
Austin Sands had five, Jake Wheeler scored four and Jeff Clark
rounded out Laguna’s scoring with two points.
In previous Aztec Classic play, Laguna fell to Huntington Beach,
73-56. Martin scored 16 points to pace the Breakers.
In girls’ basketball Monday, Laguna opened play at the Cajon
Tournament with a 58-31 rout of Bloomington.
The Breakers jumped to an 11-0 lead and never relinquished their
edge.
Aja Roley’s outstanding effort included 13 points and 21 rebounds.
The senior guard/forward also dished out four assists and had three
steals.
“She was all over the floor and seemed to get every rebound there
was,” Laguna Coach Stacy Howard said. “In our first five games, this
is Aja’s second, double-double in points and rebounds.
“As a team, we finished with 54 total rebounds, which is
outstanding.”
Freshman Brittany Clark contributed 15 points on six of nine
shootings from the floor, and added five steals and five rebounds.
Seniors Katie Sexton and Summer Kendrick scored 10 points each to
compliment Laguna’s balanced attack.
“It was a real team effort,” Howard said. “We saw the girls make
some good adjustments and play their style of ball all night. The
seniors really stepped up in these first five games to give us
consistent scoring, rebounding and court leadership.”
Prior to competing at the Cajon Tournament, Laguna went 2-2 and
captured fifth-place at the Vernie Ford Classic at Fullerton High.
Following losses to Savanna and El Segundo, the Breakers came back
to down Anaheim, 48-32, and Santiago, 63-39.
In beating Anaheim, Sexton scored 13 points and had eight
rebounds, Clark scored 11 points and came up with a school-record
nine steals and Kendrick added nine points and had 11 rebounds.
Roley got her first double-double of the season in a 12-point,
17-rebound effort against Santiago.
The 17 rebounds, Howard said, were a school record for rebounds in
a single game.
“Aja really put together her best overall game of her career,
balancing shots taken, she was five of 10 from the field, with
scrappy play,” Howard said.
Deana Awadalla scored a team-high 15 points, Sexton scored 12 and
sophomore Sam Grant came off the bench to hit seven points and
collect four rebounds.
“It was a solid team effort and we really turned it on when we
needed it,” Howard said. “We set a team record by scoring 63 points
against Santiago and are really rolling the in the right direction.”
