Slammers collect two wins

The Slammers, an under-9 boys club soccer team from Newport Beach,

started League Cup play in the Coast Soccer League with two wins Nov.

16.

The Slammers defeated West Coast United, 3-1, in the first game

while downing Corona United, 6-0, to win their pool.

Brian Team, Rob Rosenast and Luke Napolitano scored goals in the

first game while Rusty Padia protected the net. Tommy Padia and Nick

McGuinness used their speed and aggressiveness to keep West Coast

United out of scoring range.

Conor Roche, Robbie Wilson, Zev Gollis and Reed Wolonsky led the

midfield.

Roche scored three goals in the second game, one a header off a

corner kick from Napolitano.

Wilson added two goals with a single tally coming from Gollis.

Rusty Padia led a strong defense and solid goalkeeping came from

Tommy Padia and McGuinness.

Team, Wolonsky and Rosenast controlled the midfield.

The Green Goblins finished undefeated with a win over the

Flamethrowers Nov. 8.

Joey Gregory scored the game’s first goal in the third period on

an assist from Chas Beek.

Beek found Jake Farwell, who squeezed the ball past the

goalkeeper, to cap the scoring in the fourth period.

Goblins’ offensive pressure was provided by Eli Botros and Marc

Gehlke while Will Crook, Buddy Mitchell, Cole Chapin, Andrew Dimas

and T.J. Tarazevits led the defense.

Newport forges tie

* ROLLER HOCKEY: The Newport Harbor club roller hockey team

couldn’t hold a 3-0 lead and tied San Clemente, 4-4, Tuesday.

The Sailors (3-0-1) began strong with Cory Adler stealing the puck

and combining with teammate Chase Kelly for the first goal.

Sophomore forward Rory Campbell added two goals, one on an assist

from Vincent Mungo, to take a 3-0 first-period lead.

Undefeated San Clemente tied the game in the second period and

took a 4-3 lead with nine minutes, 40 seconds to play in the third

quarter.

But Campbell pulled Newport Harbor even, taking a pass from Kelly

and sending a wrist shot into the net for the hat trick and the

game’s final goal.
