Red Bull pulled off a couple of late season upsets to lay claim to
the AYSO Region 55 boys’ under-14 Division championship.
The first surprise came in semifinal round play, where the Red
Bulls upended the first-place Blue Streak, 3-1.
In the division final, they edged the Swarm, 4-3, in overtime, to
win the crown.
The Swarm had beaten Red Bull, 4-0, in an earlier regular season
match.
Swarm scored in the game’s first 40 seconds but Red Bull responded
with a header goal by Sean Schroeder off a crossing pass from Daniel
Garcia.
Red Bull gained a 3-3 halftime tie, thanks to goals by Garcia and
Dalton Hintz.
Following a scoreless second half, the teams went to overtime.
There, Hintz scored on a penalty kick to give Red Bull the win.
“The boys worked very hard today and took their play to a new
level for this unexpected victory,” Red Bull Coach Joe Sullivan said.
“We are looking forward to moving on to take on the champs of the
other regions. We have a feeling that we can do anything.”
Red Bull advances to the Area 11K playoffs, which begin in
December.
