Sea Kings win Pacific Coast League thriller
The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team answered its first
Pacific Coast League loss in two years with a thrilling five-game
victory over visiting Laguna Beach Wednesday.
The Sea Kings (14-7, 4-1 in league), who lost to Northwood Monday,
overcame a 2-1 deficit in games to win, 25-11, 17-25, 23-25, 26-24,
15-13. Junior Lindsey Ensign recorded 19 kills and eight digs for
CdM, while junior Jordan Smith added 13 kills and 14 digs. CdM senior
setter Ashley Bill amassed a career-high 38 assists, and CdM senior
Lauren Snell contributed seven digs and two aces. Britta Nielsen
added two aces.
Mesa girls undefeated
* CROSS COUNTRY: Freshman Jasmin Day placed first to lead the
Costa Mesa High girls cross country team to wins over Santa Ana and
Westminster in a double dual meet Wednesday at Irvine Park to gave
the Mustangs an undefeated (6-0) run in their second season in the
Golden West League. Day’s 18:48 paced the Mustangs, who scored a
25-30 victory over Santa Ana and an 18-45 triumph over Westminster.
Santa Ana came into the meet undefeated. Day was followed by senior
Christine Bjelland (19:29), Kyla Flores (20:14), Emily Cotton
(20:35), Stacy Krikorian (21:07), Cassey Brick (22:04) and Hahn
Nguyen (22:20). The Mustang boys defeated Westminster, 17-43, but
fell to Santa Ana, 19-41. Marco Huipe led Mesa (4-2) with a
fourth-place time of 17:15 and was followed by Steve Kosnosky (fifth,
17:29).
Northwood wins in OT
* WATER POLO: Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team couldn’t
hold a two-goal lead in the third period and lost to visiting
Northwood, 7-6, in overtime Wednesday in Pacific Coast League action.
Spencer Pirdy led CdM (5-14) with three goals while Daniel
Niehenke added two and Thomas Pearson tallied one. Gaston Sanford
made 14 saves for CdM. Jacob Murphy, Kyle Hersh, Pearson and Tom
Money each had one assist. Money also made three steals to go with
two apiece by Niehenke and Pearson.
OCC next GWC victim
* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team lost,
16-9, as defending state champion Golden West improved its winning
streak to 46 games Wednesday.
Abner Castrorena and Mike Vandenburg led the Pirates with two
goals each, while Mike Nichols recorded eight saves.
Tars win third straight
* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High girls golf team won its third Sea
View League match of the week, defeating visiting Irvine, 238-272,
Wednesday at the Santa Ana Country Club. Newport sophomore Natalie
Draganza earned medalist honors with an 8-over-par 42, while Katie
McKay (49), Erin Callahan (52) and Marissa Zehnder (52) also scored
for the Sailors.
‘Eaters edge Titans
* SOCCER: Anthony Vizcarra scored in the 52nd minute to break a
tie as host UC Irvine defeated Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, Wednesday
night in Big West Conference men’s soccer action. Chris Ruiz scored
in the 19th minute for the Anteaters (5-8-1, 1-1-1 in the Big West).
Larsen paces Estancia
* VOLLEYBALL: Hilary Larsen’s 14 kills led the Estancia High girls
volleyball team to a 27-25, 25-16, 25-19 Golden West League victory
Wednesday against visiting Westminster.
Courtney Fletcher added six kills for the Eagles (3-7, 3-5 in
league). Stacie Watson tallied a team-high 30 assists and five
service aces.
Pirates sweep Hornets
* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s team swept visiting
Fullerton, 30-28, 30-22, 30-16, in Orange Empire Conference play
Wednesday night. Donka Drozd and Brenda Bailey paced OCC (10-1, 5-1
in the OEC) with 10 kills each.
Pirates win by two
* GOLF: Lorraine Fernando earned medalist honors with an 81 to
lead the Orange Coast College women’s golf team to a 352-354 win over
Santiago Canyon in Orange Empire Conference play Wednesday.
