Newport’s speed gaining ground
Steve Virgen
If success in volleyball was solely determined by height, the Newport
Harbor High girls volleyball team would assuredly be climbing an
uphill battle.
But the Sailors, their tallest player standing 6-foot, have found
their strength in speed and Newport Coach Dan Glenn likes what he
sees.
The Sailors, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division II-AA,
used their quickness to remain undefeated in the Sea View League with
a 25-16, 25-11, 23-25, 25-21 victory over visiting Woodbridge
Tuesday.
“We don’t have a whole lot of height, but we do have some speed
out there,” Glenn said. “[Speed is] why I think we can increase our
play on a whole other level. We’re trying to get there. We have to
use our speed as an advantage. We’re learning that. But we’re running
out of time a little bit here.”
The Sailors (12-4, 5-0 in league) were able to attack the Warriors
down the middle, leading to their first two victories.
“That’s as good as we looked in awhile,” Glenn said. “I was really
happy with the way we played. I think we’re getting better.”
Kiley Hall is certainly improving, Glenn said. The 5-9 junior had
her best match of the season, delivering a match-high 14 kills.
Hall’s performance had, “nothing to do with her playing poorly
before,” Glenn said, it’s just that the Sailors were able to get her
involved more against the Warriors (9-10, 3-2).
Hall, also a standout in track and field, has gained confidence,
as well, helping her become one of Newport’s quick weapons.
“Physically she can definitely do it,” Glenn said. “But now
mentally, he knows she can do it.”
Hall and senior Alyson Jennings (10 kills) were instrumental down
the stretch in the final game. Jennings recorded five assists and
four kills to help the Sailors collect the 25-21 win.
Thanks to the serving of Hall (two aces), Kellie King, Lauren
Miller (seven kills) and Emily Turner, the Sailors built a 13-4 lead
in the fourth game. But Woodbridge, ranked No. 9 in CIF Division
II-A, came storming back with seven unanswered points.
However, Newport was able to keep the Warriors at bay with their
speed. Woodbridge came within, 22-20, but Jennings stepped up with a
kill and then an assist to Hall for a 24-20 lead. Turner, who had
nine kills ended the game and match by finishing off a Jennings
assist. Jennings also had 12 digs.
