CdM inches closer toward PCL title

Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team took an inside track to the

Pacific Coast League championship with a 12-6 victory over visiting

and previously unbeaten Laguna Beach on Tuesday.

Senior Brittany Holland swept at No. 1 singles for the Sea Kings

(8-4, 5-1 in league), including a 7-5 decision over Laguna’s No 1 --

Claire Rietsch, the defending league individual champion. Holland

trailed, 1-4, against Rietsch before making the comeback.

The doubles teams of Jill Damion-Miranda Young and Juliette

Mutzke-Jillian Braverman each won all three sets for CdM, which

claimed eight of nine doubles sets with Jami Steele and Hayley Young

winning twice Amanda Rubenstein won one singles set.

Laguna (13-1, 5-1) defeated CdM, 10-8, nearly three weeks ago. If

both teams each win their remaining matches, CdM would claim the

league title by virtue of its 12-6 score compared to Laguna’s 10-8

triumph, CdM Coach Scott Feichter said.

Doubles lead Sage Hill

* TENNIS: All three doubles teams for the Sage Hill School girls

tennis team swept and the singles added four victories to help the

Lightning post a 13-5 Academy League victory over host Fairmont Prep

Tuesday.

Jessica Tsoong and partner Sarah Flynn, along with the teams of

Grace Graham-Carissa Cummings and Laura Webb-Salen Andrews, had no

trouble in doubles for the Lightning (11-3, 9-0 in league), ranked

No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division V. Sarah Geocaris and

Stephanie Langer each claimed two sets in singles. Fairmont fell to

15-2, 7-2.

Eagles handle Mesa

* TENNIS: Stacie Nellor improved to 30-3 in singles this season

with a three-set sweep Tuesday for the Estancia High girls tennis

team in a 15-3 Golden West League victory against host Costa Mesa.

Yvonne Zaidler and Sarah Stratton also swept for the Eagles (12-0,

11-0 in league). Zaidler (36-7 this season) lost just two games. Asia

Ingram and Heather Morton won all three sets at No. 1 doubles for the

Eagles.

Sea Kings sizzle again

* GOLF: Sophomore Katie McKitterick shot 2-over 36, earning

medalist honors and leading the Corona del Mar High girls golf team

to a 229-249 Pacific Coast League victory over Tesoro at Coto de Caza

Golf Club Tuesday.

McKitterick birdied holes 3 and 4 on her way to the best score of

the day, while sophomore Veronica Friedman (43), junior Katie

Albright (47), freshman Jonna Kim (50) and junior Maggie Nelson (51)

also helped CdM (11-3, 6-0 in league) remain undefeated in the PCL.

Tesoro dropped to 6-8, 1-6.

Horn paces Tars’ win

* GOLF: Medalist Kayleigh Horn’s 46 led the Newport Harbor High

girls golf team to a 260-273 Sea View League victory over visiting

Aliso Niguel Tuesday at the par-36 Big Canyon Country Club.

Horn was followed by Natalie Draganza (49), Katie McKay (53),

Ashley Jacobs (54) and Marissa Zehnder (58).

Newport (6-10, 2-4 in league) and Aliso (3-4 in league) each

endured fast greens and tough conditions, Newport Coach Marianne

Towersey said.

Sailors shut out Oilers

* FIELD HOCKEY: Newport Harbor High’s field hockey team scored two

second-half goals and made them stand up in a 2-0 Sunset League

victory over host Huntington Beach Tuesday.

Junior Reese Simmons took a pass from Ashley Harrison and fired

from the top of the circle to score Newport’s first goal nearly three

minutes into the second half. Almost 13 minutes later, senior Kristen

Jendrusina used a left-handed blast from the right side of the circle

to beat the Huntington goalkeeper.

The Oilers fired two shots on goalkeeper Amanda Wittman, who made

one save.

Lauren Curtis, Ashley Gleason, Danielle Pfaff and Dana Owad

contributed solid defense. Jillianne Whitfield, Jendrusina and Jenny

Taylor led the midfield for Newport (15-1, 5-1 in league).

Harbor rallies for win

* WATER POLO: Senior Bryan Auer scored two goals in his first game

back since being out three weeks because of an appendectomy, helping

lead the Newport Harbor High boys water polo team to a 10-8 victory

over nonleague host Villa Park Tuesday.

The Sailors (10-7) overcame a 7-6 halftime deficit and outscored

Villa Park, 4-1, in the second half. Newport junior goalie Michael

Robinson recorded 13 saves and six steals, contributing to the

defense that shut out Villa Park (14-10) in the fourth quarter.

Senior Michael Bury led the Sailors with four goals, while

sophomore Clay Jorth scored two goals and sophomore Brett Auer and

senior Morgan Laidlaw added one goal each.

Servite drops CdM

* WATER POLO: Servite High, the No. 1 ranked team in CIF Southern

Section Division II, was too much for Corona del Mar, which lost,

16-8, in a nonleague game at CdM Tuesday.

The Sea Kings (5-13), ranked No. 9 in CIF Division I, fell behind,

7-3, in the first half and could not recover. Junior Thomas Pearson

led CdM with three goals, while Travis Hersh and Daniel Niehenke,

Walker Russell, Bryan Buhagiar and Tom Money scored one goal each.

Fennell records hat trick

* SOCCER: Matt Fennell scored three goals as the Orange Coast

men’s team defeated host Cypress, 7-1, Tuesday in Orange Empire

Conference action.

Nestor Flores, Eli Solis, Marco Santangelo and Jose Serpas scored

goals for the Pirates, who improved to 6-1-1, 9-3-1 in the OEC;

Cypress fell to 0-13, 0-8.

Cypress downs OCC

* SOCCER: Heather Metcalf recorded nine goalie saves for Orange

Coast women’s team Tuesday, but host Cypress earned a 9-0 Orange

Empire Conference win as the Chargers extended their OEC unbeaten

streak to 101 games (94-0-7). Cypress has outscored its opponents

this season, 69-1.
