Anteaters stun Cal, 1-0

The UC Irvine Anteaters (3-5) shocked the 18th-ranked California
Golden Bears’ men’s soccer team (3-4-1) with a 1-0 victory Friday at
the Stanford Nike Invitational in Stanford.
Junior Sebastian Galmarini headed in the only goal of the game in
the 68th minute on a cross by junior David Yemane. Sophomore
goalkeeper Ryan Mathy earned his third shutout on the season and
picked up six saves. The win is the first win for UCI over the Golden
Bears since the 1997 season, also a 1-0 Anteater victory. The
Anteaters will face host Stanford on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Coast improves to 5-0
* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team
went undefeated in nonconference action, sweeping visiting
Southwestern, 30-13, 30-15, 30-14, Friday night to improve to 5-0.
Outside hitter Marti Merriott led the Pirates with 11 kills while
Christine Woller tallied 10 kills to go with three service aces.
Mesa falls to Seahawks
* VOLLEYBALL: Visiting Ocean View High’s girls volleyball team
forged sustained runs and consistent serving to defeat Costa Mesa,
25-14, 21-25, 25-12, 19-25, 15-7, in a Golden West League match
Friday.
Mesa third in pool play
* WATER POLO: Costa Mesa High sophomore Kyle Thorsness scored
eight goals to lead the boys water polo team to a 10-4 victory
against Cerritos to wrap up pool play in the Magnolia tournament
Friday at Magnolia High.
VU wins third in a row
* SOCCER: The Vanguard University women’s soccer team recorded its
fourth shutout of the season with a 1-0 victory over visiting Cal
State Monterey Friday. Freshman Megan Swann scored her first
collegiate goal in the 21st minute on a cross from Ashley DeLoach.
Coast routs Cypress
* SOCCER: Sophomore midfielder Joel Sotolongo and freshman forward
Eli Solis each scored twice and added an assist to lead the host
Orange Coast College men’s soccer team to an 8-0 victory over Cypress
Friday in the Orange Empire Conference opener for both teams.
UCI wins by 15 strokes
* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team shot a tournament-record
18-under-par 846 to win the Northwest Collegiate tournament by 15
strokes over Long Beach State Friday at the Trysting Tree Golf Course
in Corvallis, Ore.
UCI senior Vinnie Poncino finished one shot behind medalist Travis
Bertoni of Cal Poly. Tars fall at St. Francis
* VOLLEYBALL: Host St. Francis of Mountain View, three-time
defending state champions, defeated the Newport Harbor girls
volleyball team Friday, 25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 26-24.
Alyson Jennings had 15 kills, 15 digs and 23 assists for the Tars
(6-3), who play at Arch Bishop Mitty of San Jose at 6 tonight in
another nonleague match against a state power. Lauren Miller (13
kills), Emily Turner and Kiley Hall (seven each) also led Newport.
VU notches shutout
* SOCCER: Vanguard’s women’s soccer team won its third game in a
row as the Lions shutout California State Monterey Bay, 1-0, Friday
in Costa Mesa.
Megan Swann recorded her first collegiate goal to give VU the 1-0
lead.
