‘Save the Canyon’ history showcased
The Laguna Beach Historical Society invites the public to hear
Mark Chamberlain and Jerry Burchfield today.
The Laguna Beach Historical Society will hold the “History of Save
Laguna Canyon” by Chamberlain and Burchfield, who have been involved
with the canyon environment for more than 20 years.
The artists used photographs to share their concerns about Laguna
Canyon. Their projects include “The Tell” and “Save the Canyon.”
The event will start at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers,
505 Forest Ave. There is no charge to attend the talk.
Laguna High Interact Club names officers
The Interact Club of Laguna Beach High School recently elected its
new officers for the 2003-04 academic year.
Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people at
Laguna Beach High School. The club gives students an opportunity to
participate in projects in the community and internationally while
learning leadership skills and meeting new friends. Students can also
earn community service credits for their graduation requirements.

Elected were Jamie Contreras, co-president; Michael Codine,
co-president; Eric Tran, co-vice president; Grant Hoftmeister,

Sawdust announces new board members
The Sawdust Art Festival recently held its annual elections for
seats on its board of directors. Each person on the nine-member board
serves for three years; three seats are elected each year.
The new members of the 2003-04 Sawdust Art Festival Board of
Directors are Mike Kelly, treasurer; Eleanor Henry and Marsh Scott.
Other board members are Martin Roberts, president; Tracey
Moscaritolo, vice president; Larry Gill, secretary; and Debra Covern,
Helen McNamara and Drew Weir.
All members of the board are exhibitors at the Sawdust Art
Festival and are residents of Laguna Beach.

La Playa offers English classes
La Playa Center is a family center that teaches free classes in
English-as-a-second language to adults. It is in session from 9 to 11
a.m. in the Guild Hall at St. Mary’s Church, 428 Park Ave.
Free child care is provided. All are welcome. For more

Women’s Club hosts panel discussion
The Women’s Club of Laguna Beach will host a panel to discuss
“Making Our Voices Heard” at its Oct. 3 luncheon at 286 St. Ann’s
Drive.
Panel participants will include League of Women Voters President
Linda T. Brown, Woman for Board Member Megan Doherty, Atty. Jane Egly
and Councilwoman Elizabeth Pearson.
These speakers will share challenges and experiences along with
suggestions for effective organizational participation. The audience
will be encouraged to ask questions.
Information about various women’s groups and opportunities for
community service will be available. All members are encouraged to
bring a friend and the public is welcome to attend. The club is
extending a special invitation to people new to Laguna Beach.
Reservations for a light lunch are $10 per person and will be
accepted through Tuesday at (949) 497-1200. The price at the door
will be $12 per person. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.
Grossman to speak about General Plan
Planning Commissioner Norm Grossman will speak about the General
Plan and the work of the Planning Commission at the Laguna Beach Unit
meeting of the League of Women Voters.
Anyone interested is invited to attend. The meeting will begin at
9:15 a.m. Oct. 4 at the Laguna Club for Kids above Bluebird Park at

Tidewater docent training set
Fall training sessions for the Tidewater Docent Program are set
for 7 p.m. Oct. 9 and 10 at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point Harbor.
Last year’s first class of 45 volunteers have logged more than 400
hours of direct service teaching visitors about Laguna’s tide pools
and the habitat living along the coast.
It’s time to get the palettes ready
The 2003 Palette Competition has begun.
Artists are provided a prepared 4-foot by 3-foot wooden palette on
which to paint original artwork. The completed palettes are displayed
on lampposts throughout the city during the holiday season.
Entries will be accepted by Laguna Beach residents, artists with a
studio in Laguna Beach or a showing in a Laguna Beach gallery,
students of Laguna Beach schools or the Laguna Beach College of Art
and Design and artists exhibiting in the Sawdust Festival, Art-A-Fair
or Festival of Arts. Proof of residency or gallery, school or
festival affiliation will be required.
Applicants are asked to submit a palette design on 8
1/2-inch-by-11-inch paper, in color, within the border of a palette
outline. The design must have a horizontal orientation.
The deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 10 and should be delivered to the
Community Services Department, 505 Forest Ave.
