Estancia High’s boys and girls cross country teams each improved to
2-0 after a Golden West League double dual meet against Ocean View
and host Westminster on Thursday.
The Eagle boys defeated Westminster, 16-43, while beating Ocean
View, 15-45. The Estancia girls defeated Westminster, which didn’t
score, while downing Ocean View, 22-37.
Estancia’s Matt Zich, Alex Cahuantzi and C.J. Buchman finished
1-2-3, each with a 17:49, followed by Panfilo Elias’ 18:10, good for
fourth place. Geovani Rodea (sixth, 18:16) and Martin Diaz (eighth,
18:33) rounded out the top-10 finishers for the Eagles.
Estancia freshman Janette Abrego led all girl runners with a 19:54
followed by Sydney Barloon (third, 20:28), Okairy Lomeli (fifth,
21:59), Lucy Leon (ninth, 22:37) and Diana Castro (10th, 22:42) for the Eagles.
Fatima Carrasco placed 11th in 22:53 while Gabby Cox ran in 23:53.
CdM boys surprised
* CROSS COUNTRY: The Corona del Mar High girls cross country team
defeated Calvary Chapel and Laguna Beach in a Pacific Coast League
double dual home meet Thursday, but the CdM boys team was surprised
by Laguna Beach and had to settle for a split.
The CdM girls defeated Calvary, 21-40, and Laguna Beach, 15-50,
behind freshman Hilary May, who won the three-mile event in 19:39.
Taryn Kawata (second in 19:44) also paced the Sea Kings.
Kevin Artz (third in 16:33) was 30 seconds behind the winner from
Laguna Beach, while Brandon Borcoman (sixth in 17:11), Jack Turner (seventh in 17:20), J.C. Turner (eighth in 17:23) and Jeritt Thayer
(ninth in 17:25) also scored for CdM.
Laguna Beach’s boys won, 23-33, while CdM defeated Calvary Chapel,
15-50.
It was the first league loss in two years for the CdM boys, whom
Coach Bill Sumner said received a wake-up call.
Mesa girls prevail
* CROSS COUNTRY: Costa Mesa High sophomore Jasmin Day, competing
in her first cross country dual meet, led the Mustangs to an 18-41
Golden West League-opening girls victory over visiting Saddleback
Thursday.
Day’s winning time was 19:00, while Christine Bjelland (19:18) and
Emily Cotton (19:29) rounded out a top-three sweep for the hosts.
Kyla Flores (fifth in 19:29) and Anna Rodriguez (seventh in 21:18)
also scored for the Mustangs.
In the boys meet, the Roadrunners prevailed, 18-45, as Mesa senior
Marco Huipe led the Mustangs with a third-place clocking of 16:57.
Mario Herrera (17:20), Stephen Kosnosky (18:00), Saul Palomar
(18:00) and Jorge Raya (18:18) also scored for the hosts.
Diablos best Tars
* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High girls golf team dropped a
nonleague match to Mission Viejo, 253-262, Thursday at the Mission
Viejo Country Club.
Kayleigh Horn (44) and Natalie Draganza (45) paced the Sailors at
the par-36 course. Newport Harbor is now 4-2.
Sailors edge Tartans
* FIELD HOCKEY: Tiffany Vandersloot scored 23 minutes into the
second half to key Newport Harbor High’s 1-0 nonleague field hockey
win over host Glendora Thursday at Finkbiner Park.
Ashley Harrison assisted the lone goal to help the Sailors improve
to 5-0.
Amanda Whittman had four saves for the Tars.
Lightning victorious
* GOLF: Andrea Han shot 16-over-par 51 to lead the Sage Hill
School girls golf team to a 269-285 nonleague win over Irvine
Thursday at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine.
Chelsea Vayner (52), Emma Koh (54), Natalie Kraft (56) and Madyson
Page (56) also scored for the Lightning (2-3).
