CdM scrappy in loss to powerful Wilson

Steve Virgen

Corona del Mar High cut an 8-3 deficit to two and held Long Beach

Wilson’s boys water polo team scoreless in the third quarter Tuesday

at Belmont Plaza. But if you ask CdM Coach Mike Evans and the Sea

Kings if there was anything positive they could take away from the

game they would tell you, nothing.

They would rather forget about this game.

Long Beach Wilson (3-0), ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section

Division I, scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to

pull away from the Sea Kings and won the nonleague contest, 12-6.

If there was anything Evans wanted his team to take away from the

game, it was, “What it feels like to roll over and let a team beat

you.”

“It was not a good day for us,” said Evans, the Sea Kings’

first-year coach. “[The 8-6 deficit] wasn’t real indicative of the

game. This is one of those games where our guys need to figure out

how to keep their head up and concentrate on what’s going on out

there.”

The Bruins now have a 42-game winning streak, and though they are

young, they appeared more seasoned than CdM (1-3).

“Age-wise we’re the same, but with experience we weren’t,” Evans

said. “We are still a work in progress.”

Wilson opened the game with a 3-0 lead in the first three minutes,

as the Bruins scored one goal on an extra-man chance and two

counterattack goals.

CdM, ranked No. 7 in CIF Division I, answered with 3:26 left in

the opening period when sophomore Tom Money scored on a six-on-five

opportunity. Money led the Sea Kings with three goals, while Matt

Sagehorn, who is also a sophomore, scored a game-high five goals for

the Bruins.

Wilson built its biggest lead of the game, 8-3, with 2:48 left

before halftime when Sagehorn made good on an outside shot. But, CdM

scored twice in the final 1:48 to start what would be a 3-0 run.

Sea King junior Tom Pearson and Money each scored a goal when CdM

had the extra man. CdM junior Spencer Pirdy also finished with one

goal.

Junior goalie Gaston Sanford recorded three of his nine saves to

help the Sea Kings hold the Bruins scoreless in the third period.

Wilson’s junior goalie Chay Lapin, who had 16 saves, stuffed four

shots in the fourth period, when CdM did not score a goal.
