CdM provides Feichter first win

The Corona del Mar High girls tennis team got the sour taste of a
loss out of its mouth Tuesday with a 14-4 nonleague victory over
visiting Woodbridge.
The Sea Kings (1-1) rebounded strongly after dropping their
opening match to Mater Dei, 10-8, Friday.
Seniors Brittany Holland and Juliette Mutzke returned to the
courts Tuesday after both missing the first match Friday because of
recruiting trips.
Both gave the Warriors fits as Holland only lost two games at No.
1 singles while Mutzke teamed with freshman Jill Damion at No. 3
doubles to sweep, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. CdM’s No. 2 doubles team of Jackie
Manning and freshman Miranda Young swept, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, while Jamie
Steele and Hayley Young, Miranda’s sister, claimed two of three sets.
Freshman Jillian Braverman lost the first but rebounded with 6-1,
6-0 victories in her closing two sets at No. 3 singles despite
battling cramps, first-year CdM head coach Scott Feichter said.
“She is going to the doctor [today] to get that checked out,”
Feichter said.
Sophomore Rachel Miller won a set substituting at No. 2 singles
for senior Amanda Rubenstein.
Woodbridge lost six seniors from a year ago, including Elizabeth
Exon, the CIF Southern Section singles champion a year ago, but the
victory was still sweet for Feichter.
“It feels good,” he said to get his first win. “But we are not in
league yet and I really have to get them matched up so that they will
work well together and grow. Damion is an extremely good doubles
player. Good volleys and strong focus was the key today.”
CdM hosts Troy at 3 p.m. Thursday.
