Student charged with insurance fraud
The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office on Monday
filed four counts of felony insurance fraud against a 21-year-old
Whittier Law School student, officials said.
Prosecutors alleged that 21-year-old Roopinder Goraya of Fontana
submitted a claim to Safeco Insurance saying his car stereo had been
stolen. Officials said Goraya provided a receipt that was
fraudulently prepared by a friend, 24-year-old Samir Rai of Chino
Hills. Rai was also arrested and charged.
Costa Mesa police arrested Goraya on Wednesday when he was
attending classes at Whittier Law School, officials said. He was
booked into the Costa Mesa city jail with bail set at $25,000.
On Thursday, Goraya surrendered to San Bernardino County District
Attorney investigators, officials said.
Women dies in freeway accident
A 23-year-old Westminster woman died on the spot on the San Diego
Freeway in Costa Mesa after her car crashed and hit the center
median, throwing her out of the car causing her to be run over by at
least two other vehicles, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Margarita Govea was driving southbound on the freeway north of
Harbor Boulevard when her 2002 Honda Accord hit the center divide,
said Officer Stacey Willits.
“She got out of her car and was hit by two other cars,” she said.
“It was a pretty dramatic crash.”
Orange County Coroner officials said Govea died of multiple
injuries.
An investigation is ongoing.
