Seahawks dominate opener, 40-0

The Newport-Mesa Junior Midget Seahawks (ages 11-13) opened up the Junior All-American Football season with a 40-0 victory over the La

Mirada Matadors Sept. 6.

On the first play from scrimmage, quarterback Matt Barclay

completed a 40-yard pass to running back Jacob Gildart-Mathany.

Tailback Matt Garza then carried to the 5-yard line. Fullback Eric

Rask then ran the ball into the end zone for the first of two

touchdowns.

Gildart scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 60-yard run

before the first quarter ended.

The Seahawks led, 27-0, at halftime.

Barclay continued his precision passing with a 25-yard TD strike

to receiver Robbie Boyer and Carlos Valdes later scored on a 29-yard

run, helped by the blocking of Rask, Corbin McNutt and Max Stiegler.

Valdes, playing safety, added an interception and returned it 43

yards to the 25. Cornerback Tyler Harmon intercepted a pass at the 25

The Seahawks’ defense was led by Justin Elbourn, Kevin

Morganstern, McNutt, Stiegler, Alex Vollaire, Morgan Brombal, Scottie

Chene, Harmon, Hunter Alder, James McKennon, John Heard, Bret

Hanrahan, Zackary Peterson, Evan Livadas, Travis Prickett and

scamper on the opening drive with help from Adrian Luchs.

J.D. Abbott, Dylan McDonald and Matt Morris also scored TDs in the

shutout.

Defensive linemen Kyle Cabley, Kyle Gladding, Bunk Hooper and

Danny Busch continuously pressured the Matador quarterback, forcing

two turnovers. Gladding caused and recovered one fumble and defensive

back Mitchell Sands added an interception.

Scott Frazier’s touchdown-saving tackle in the game’s closing

minutes preserved the shutout.

The offensive line was led by Ryan Albert, John Christian, Robert

Connealy, Craig Jackson, Mike Lancaster and Grant Keligian.

Sands and Luchs also saw time at quarterback and connected with

receivers Tyler Haly, William Ham, Callen Sullivan and Jack Robison

to sustain drives.

Linebackers Kyle Chene, Andrew Hicks and Cathen Cokas helped to

anchor the defense.

In Clinic (8-10) action:

with help from the offensive line of Mario Rosales, A.J. Swies, Trent

In Junior Clinic (7-8) action:

* Seahawks 13, Corona Panthers 0:

Two touchdown runs by tailback Jeff Carlyle sparked Newport

against the host Panthers.

The Seahawks, led by captains Carlyle and Rocky Feinberg, allowed

just three first downs and drove the ball with strong performances by

quarterbacks J.C. Genova, Aaron Crosby and Levi Stillman. Carlyle and

halfback Cory Kablay teamed to run for more than 100 yards, with

Genova rushing for an additional 45 yards.

A stellar defense, led by linebacker Josh Rivera, who had eight

solo tackles, limited Corona’s offense. Kablay, playing safety, made

six solo tackles with defensive end Taro Doone adding five and

cornerback Genova making four. Stillman, Kablay, Crosby, Albert and a

host of other Seahawks limited the Panthers to less than 40 yards

rushing, anchored by a starting line of Doone, Feinberg, Chris

Johnstone, Garret Farthing, James Christian and Daniel Albert.

Strong kicking from Christian with the solid play of Stephen

Kennan, Levi Swoger, Marquise Broussard, Tyler Rios and Kyle Benter,

aided in the victory. Cameron Davis, James Barrett and Nic Landstrom

gave support.

Doone anchored the offensive line at center and was flanked by

Colbe Coste and Christian at guard, Feinberg and Rivera at tackle and

Farthing and Johnstone at tight end.

In Jr. Pee Wee (9-11) action:

connected with Max Colvin on a screen pass for a touchdown. Wallace

added four tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

In Flag division action:

* Corona 18, Seahawks 13: For the first time in several years, the league has a Flag

division for 6-year-olds and Newport nearly came away with victory.

The Seahawks had a touchdown called back on a penalty.

Newport quarterback Quest Truxton ran the offense, fueled by

running backs Preston Dexter and Cole Collins, as well as wide

receivers Keaton Cablay and Clint Henderson.

Collins took a pitch and scored on a 35-yard run and Cablay added

the extra points on a short burst from scrimmage.

Linemen Davis Hanscom and Trevor Branca, with centers Colin

Brandenberger and Michael Reese, provided the necessary protection.

Beau Roth and Will Eary delivered on defense.

Truxton and Cablay both provided strong play at safety.
