UCI continues hot start with a home sweep

Four UC Irvine women’s volleyball players recorded double-digit kills

as the Anteaters defeated visiting Northeastern, 30-21, 27-30, 32-30, 30-26, Wednesday at Crawford Court.

UCI junior outside hitter Kelly Wing had a match-high 22 kills and

added 12 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Sami Cash and sophomore

Amanda Vazquez chipped in 20 and 14 kills, respectively, both career

highs. Vazquez also had six blocks for a new career best.

Sophomore Terbrie Taylor had 13 kills for the ‘Eaters.

Defensive specialist Keegan Featherstone and libero Brenda

Waterman had 15 digs apiece while setter Ashlie Hain amassed 58

assists to help UCI improve to 4-1.

Northeastern, led by 13 kills apiece from Larissa Adomat and

Rebecca Holland, as well as 45 assists by Kristin Ursillo, fell to

0-3 on the season.

Vanguard rolls on, 5-1

* SOCCER: The Vanguard men’s soccer team continued its impressive

start Wednesday, earning a 5-1 nonconference road victory at

Occidental College.

Junior forward Jose Hernandez scored three goals to pace the Lions

(4-0), netting his first goal 70 seconds into the contest.

Sophomore Dave McAulay put Vanguard up, 2-0, in the sixth minute,

but Flint Wilkerson tallied for the hosts and the score was 2-1 at

halftime.

Hernandez scored in the 56th minute, then senior Sean Ganey

converted a header and Hernandez booted in a penalty kick to round

out the scoring for the Lions.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tommaso Bianchi made 10 saves for the winners.

It’s the best start for Vanguard since 1997 when the team also

opened 4-0.

It was the season opener for Occidental.

Weislmaier eliminated

* TENNIS: Dieter Weislmaier, a Costa Mesa resident expected to

play tennis for Vanguard University in the spring, fell in the

semifinals Monday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center of a prequalifying

tournament for the 2003 Diadora Pro-Championship, a USTA men’s

futures event to be held at the same venue Sept. 15-21.

Weislmaier, who sneaked past No. 2-seeded Cameron Ball in the

third round when the Newport Beach resident had to default due to

injury, lost to No. 4-seed Aaron Yovan in the semifinals, 7-5, 4-6,

6-2.

Top-seeded Oren Motevassel of Coto de Caza won the event,

defeating Yovan, 6-3, 6-2, in the final. Motevassel earns a wild-card

berth in the future’s event.

CdM baseball academy

* BASEBALL: Spots remain for the Corona del Mar High Fall Baseball

Academy that begins Monday and runs through Nov. 5 at the CdM varsity

baseball field.

CdM High Coach John Emme heads an instructional staff that

includes Newport Harbor Coach Joel Desguin and former Major Leaguer

Jeff Gardner. The focus is on improving offensive and defensive

skills with an emphasis on fundamentals. Sessions run Mondays and

Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Cost is $450 per camper and includes a Sea King hat, T-shirt and

personalized videotaping.
