Cal sweeps Anteaters

The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team fell to No. 24-ranked Cal,
30-19, 30-21, 30-26, Sunday night in the finale of the UC Irvine
Tournament at Crawford Court.
Junior outside hitter Kelly Wing had a match-high 15 kills for the Anteaters (3-1), who also receives 34 assists from Ashlie Hain.
Senior libero Brenda Waterman had 11 digs.
* Earlier Sunday, the Anteaters swept West Virginia, 30-19, 31-29,
30-21, holding the Mountaineers to an .088 hitting percentage at
Crawford Court.
The Anteaters were keyed by sophomore outside hitter Terbrie
Taylor’s career-high 21 kills and .606 hitting clip, while added 14
kills and 12 digs.
Waterman had a match-high 16 digs.
UCI also posted an 18-9 advantage in blocks, with junior middle
blocker Sami Cash leading the way with five.
Dmitra Havriluk, a Corona del Mar High product, had three kills,
seven digs and two ace serves for the Mountaineers.
May gets another title
* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High product Misty May teamed with
Kerri Walsh to win another Association of Volleyball Professionals
beach volleyball tour event Saturday as the top-seeded duo defeated
Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs, 21-11, 21-17, in the title match of
the Chicago Open.
Former Corona del Mar High and Orange Coast College standout Brian
Lewis finished equal third with partner Scott Ayakatubby in the men’s
event that concluded Sunday.
Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer teamed with Casey Jennings
to earn a ninth-place finish in the event.
The tour visits Las Vegas for a tournament scheduled Thursday
through Sunday.
OCC men impressive
* CROSS COUNTRY: The Orange Coast College men’s and women’s cross
country teams opened their seasons Saturday, finishing third and
seventh, respectively, at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational at
Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea.
The Coast men scored 106 points while Cal State Fullerton won with
51.
The OCC women finished with 179 points.
The Vanguard University men’s team finished 10th with 245 points
while the women’s squad placed 13th with 278 points. Cal State
Fullerton also took the women’s title, tallying 90 points.
Vanguard sophomore Ava Jones finished second in the women’s 5k
race at 18:26.20 while Lion Jenny Thune finished 11th in 18:55.70.
Coast sophomore Sandra Montoya finished 15th in 19:03.60 on the
women’s side and Vanguard’s Liz Huipe was 23rd in 19:20.50.
Vanguard senior Tony Magana led the Lions with a 43rd-place finish
(26:51) in the men’s 8k race, followed by Erick Garcia (26:58) and
Mikael Larsson (27:09).
Juan Altamirano led all Coast men with a 27:17 clocking. Coast’s
Kohyar Naderi finished in 27:19.70 on the men’s side while Vanguard’s
Matt Meyer crossed in 27:29.10. Coast runners Andre Brown (27:52.50),
Jason Valenzuela (28:07.20), Chris Durst (28:14.10), Joshua Gerard
(28:24.60), Matt Staggs (28:36.50), Chris Mansi (28:39.30), Abel
Flores (28:55.90), Ignacio Perez (28:56.10), Mario Cruz (30:11.40)
and Carlos Leon (31:09.70) all finished, as did Vanguard’s John
Nelson (28:09.50) and Costa Mesa High product Zach Powell (31:05.80).
Other OCC women’s finishers inlcuded Ludi Valdez (54th, 20:19.60),
Jessica Huerta (55th, 20:20.20), Annie Garton (20:30.60), Jane Alder
(20:44.60), Hanni Geider (20:46.80), Jasmine Geider (21:08.80),
Jennifer Sliwa (21:38), Claudia Sanchez (21:41.10), Viviana Gutierrez
(23:46.10) and Lucy Perez (23:57.00).
Vanguard’s Bridget Lonsdale (21:19.70), Christol McDonald
(22:14.70) and Jennifer Saxton (23:39) finished for the Lions.
The meet attracted schools such as USC, Concordia, San Diego
State, Biola Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chapman.
Lions’ women split
* SOCCER: The Vanguard University women’s soccer team rallied to
tie the game, but gave up the final goal in a 4-3 loss to Trinity
International of Illinois Saturday at the Westmont Tournament in
Santa Barbara.
The loss forced the Lions to accept a split in the two-day
tournament, after dominating Dominican University in a 5-0 triumph
Friday.
Saturday, Zenifer Zipprich scored the first goal for the Lions,
converting a long through ball from fellow freshman Heather Hutton to
tie the game, 1-1.
Trinity then scored twice to regain control, but Zipprich and
Hutton combined again on a goal in the 50th minute, with Zipprich
finding the net.
Hutton headed in an Ashley DeLoach corner kick six minutes later
for the equalizer, but Trinity’s Cori Sanchez netted her third goal
in the 60th minute to even Vanguard’s record at 1-1.
Friday, Zipprich tallied two goals, among Vanguard’s four
second-half scores, after the Lions held the Penguins without a shot
on goal in the first half.
DeLoach got the lone first-half score when she connected off a
cross from Hutton in the seventh minute.
Hutton scored seven minutes in the second half and then notched
her second assist 10 minutes on Zipprich’s first goal.
Hutton also assisted Zipprich’s second goal, as did Bryanna
Gonzales.
Sophomore Brooke Grindle finished off the scoring, putting away a
rebound after Gonzales hit the post with 14 minutes to play.
Goalie Stacy Britton earned her first collegiate victory and
shutout in her first career start.
Pelzel, U.S. third
* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine senior All-American Jimmy Pelzel was a
member of the United States men’s volleyball team that won the bronze
medal Sunday at the World University Games in Korea.
The Americans defeated France, 19-25, 25-22, 26-24, 20-25, 15-10,
in the bronze-medal match.
Local player advances
* TENNIS: Dieter Weislmaier, a Costa Mesa resident who is expected
to play tennis at Vanguard University in the spring, advanced to the
quarterfinals of the Costa Mesa Men’s Futures prequalifying event at
the Costa Mesa Tennis Center Sunday when Corona del Mar High standout
Cameron Ball had to default in the Round of 16 due to injury.
Ball, who won the first set, 6-3, elected to default due to a torn
nerve between his biceps and forearm, according to CdM Coach Tim
Mang, who was in attendance.
Weislmaier, a native of Germany, then defeated Brenn Auld from
Corona, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarterfinals and will meet Aaron Yovan
from Irvine in today’s 9 a.m. semifinal match.
