A day of haircuts for heritage

The Sierra Club and the California Cultural Resource Preservation
Alliance will host a fund-raiser to save Native American sites
threatened by development. The event will feature haircuts, live
music, information and an outdoor boutique with Native American
baskets and jewelry.
The event will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Thomas David
Salon, 1485 Glenneyre St. Suggested donation for a haircut is $30.
Orange County archeologists estimate that at least 90% of the
known archeological sites that once existed in the county have been
destroyed by development. The group is now working to save Putiidhem,
a burial ground in San Juan Capistrano.
English as a second language offered
The Laguna Beach Unified School District will offer an adult
education program for English as a second language.
The free class will start Sept. 8. Classes are from 5:30 to 8:30
p.m. Monday through Thursday at Laguna Beach High School.

Art museum seeking art-loving guides
The Laguna Art Museum is looking for docents.
Those interested are invited to a new member tea at 9:30 a.m.
Sept. 3 at the museum, 307 Cliff Drive.
The docent council will meet prospective docents and describe the
training. Trainees learn the elements of art, the historical contexts
of art and how to guide visitors through the museum’s exhibits.
Training will run from September through May. Trainees must attend
one morning a week.

Annual university women brunch set
The American Assn. of University Women Laguna Beach branch will
host a panel discussing grass-roots support for creating a Department
of Peace at its membership brunch on Sept. 13.
Guest speakers Grace Avalon, Barbara Smith and Leslie Whiting with
the Global Renaissance Alliance, will discuss “Giving a Legislative
Arm to Peace.”
Also during the brunch, two Thurston Middle School eighth-graders,
Allison Dial and Laura Renault, winners of the Tech Trek Math/Science
and Computer Camp funded by the association, will tell about their
weeklong experiences at UC San Diego.
The association’s Laguna president, Carol Redford, will present an
overview of the branch’s programs and events of the year.
The brunch will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at
Pacific Island Village Clubhouse No. 1, 31551 Flying Cloud.
Membership in the association is open to all college or university
graduates holding a baccalaureate or higher degree. For information,

Community Clinic to hold annual gala
The Laguna Beach Community Clinic will honor Mayor Toni Iseman for
her service at its annual gala fund-raiser, “Legends and Icons,” on
Sept. 14.
The event at the Montage Resort and Spa will feature dinner,
silent and live auctions, a diamond and cash opportunity drawing, and
entertainment from Five Points Quartet.
Along with Iseman, the clinic will honor Mark De Palma of Mark’s
Catering for his commitment to the community; Glenn Howard, clinic
CFO; and Vibiana Pomo for her volunteer work for the past 12 years.
This year’s gala will be a salute to the luminaries of the
entertainment industry and will feature autographed photos and
memorabilia from more than 100 celebrities. A sample of items that
will be auctioned include Jane Russell’s autographed biography, a
signed colored pencil drawing from Henry Winkler, and a signed
playbill from the Broadway show “Hairspray.”
Laguna Beach Community Clinic is a nonprofit organization that
offers medical and dental services regardless of the ability to pay.
Tickets to “Legends and Icons” are $185 per person. For more
