Costa Mesa’s da Silva wins first competition

Fabiola da Silva, a Costa Mesa resident, won the women’s aggressive

in-line park title in X Games IX at the Staples Center in Los Angeles

on Thursday.

Competing in her first event of the X Games, da Silva, a Brazilian

native, scored 60.50 points, edging past Jenny Logue, who scored

59.75. Logue is from Great Britain.

The aggressive in-line park competition features a course that is

comprised of ledges, handrails, wedge ramps, quarter pipes, spine

ramps and street-oriented obstacles. Each athlete takes two 60-second

runs and is judged on a point system for their performances. The

greater score of the two runs is given as the competitor’s best

score.

Da Silva is one of the most recognizable athletes of the X Games.

She will also compete in the aggressive in-line vert final Sunday at

1:30, also at the Staples Center.

The X Games continue today with the skateboard vert doubles final,

which will include Costa Mesa’s Rune Glifberg and Chris Gentry. In

the skateboard vert doubles skaters pick their own partners and try

to create unique lines together. Partners get a greater number of

points for teamwork.
