Boat auction raises money, saves classes
Sponsored by the Orange Coast College School of Sailing and
Seamanship and attracting nearly 400 people, the annual boat auction
and marine-gear sale on Saturday raised nearly $64,000 to restore
classes eliminated because of budget cuts.
“This year’s sale will allow us to put 21 classes back into our
school schedule, positively impacting more than 600 students,” OCC
Foundation Director Douglas C. Bennett said in a press release.
“These are 21 classes that, without the boat sale, would not have
been offered.”
Anyone wishing to donate items for next year’s sale may do so by
calling OCC’s School of Sailing and Seamanship at (949) 645-9412.
Race For the Cure seeks volunteers
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, needs about 2,000
volunteers for the expected 30,000 participants of 12th annual Orange
County 5K Race for the Cure, Sept. 28 event at Fashion Island.
Funds raised benefit Komen’s breast health care programs in Orange
County, as well as national breast-cancer research. Last year, the
race raised $1.3 million, of which 75% stayed in Orange County to
support outreach programs.
“One in every seven women in Orange County will be diagnosed with
breast cancer during her lifetime,” Komen Executive Director Monica
McDade said in a press release. “The race provides an opportunity for
all local residents to get involved and make a meaningful
contribution.”
Dedicated solely to raising money to fight breast cancer, the race
is the largest 5K event in California. Volunteers are needed for
preregistration events, various weekend positions, clerical support,
committee member positions, registration, teams and sponsorships.
For more information or to volunteer, call (714) 957-9157 or visit
