Fittingly, the ninth annual United States Tennis Association national
senior father and son championships will take place Father’s Day
weekend at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
The USTA-sanctioned event will feature 35 teams in the senior
(fathers 60 and older) and the super senior (70 and older) divisions
when play begins June 13.
The father-son doubles duo of Gordon and Scott Davis, the director
of tennis at NBTC, will attempt to win its third straight title while
Larry and son John Huebner will team up again this year. Larry and
John won the title in 2001 while Larry teamed with his other son,
Jim, to claim the championship last year.
Play begins Friday at 10:15 p.m. The super senior division
features 19 doubles teams while the senior division has 16 entered.
Each team is guaranteed two best-of-three set matches.
Saturday’s matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. with Sunday play
scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
The finals for the super senior division will be at 10:45 a.m.
while the senior title match will begin at 12:30 p.m. Playoffs for
third and fourth place will also be held Sunday morning.
