What a difference a player makes.
In their first game on Thursday, Mariners Christian lost, 7-0, to
Kaiser’s No. 1 team.
On Friday, Brittany Langdon, who couldn’t play Thursday because of
a basketball commitment, joined the team and helped guide Mariners
Christian to a 6-0 victory over Harbor View in a fifth- and
sixth-grade girls soccer game in Pool A of the Daily Pilot Cup at the
Costa Mesa Farm Complex.
Langdon, who plays for the Wolfpack club soccer team, scored two
goals and dished out two assists. Katie Deverian was the beneficiary
of both assists and led the team with three goals.
“Having [Langdon] changes the whole dynamics of the game,”
Mariners Christian Coach Jon Deverian said.
Langdon controlled the entire field for Mariners Christian,
helping set up plays for her teammates.
After the teams went scoreless for the first 15 minutes, battling
it out in the midfield, Avery Amies scored the first goal when she
picked up the ball in front of the net and knocked it past Harbor
View’s keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, Langdon, playing sweeper, took the ball at the
midfield and drove all the way into the box and blasted a shot the
goalkeeper chose to kick away instead of grabbing. Deverian was right
there for the rebound and slammed it home for a 2-0 lead.
The Landgon-Deverian connection worked again before the half when
Langdon took the ball down the sideline the length of the field and
crossed it to Deverian in the middle, who sailed it in for a 3-0
halftime lead.
Deverian opened the second half completing her hat trick. After
Langdon sent a long ball down into the box, there was a scramble for
the ball before Danielle Derman came up with it. She bumped a short
pass to Deverian who tapped it into the net for a 4-0 lead.
Langdon and Ashley Mitchell closed out the scoring for Mariners
Christian, each scoring a goal in the final minutes.
Mariners Christian finished pool play 1-1. Harbor View went 0-2.
Defending champion Kaiser, won the pool and will play in today’s
quarterfinals.
