HB Breakers win tourney title
The HB Breakers, a local club baseball team, became champions of the
SoCal Super Series Tournament 13-year-old Division by winning their
final three games of the two-day event last weekend in San Clemente.
In the division final, the Breakers defeated the Stingrays, 7-3.
Timely hitting combined with a tough defense and solid pitching
led the tournament title.
Breakers catcher Mickey Moses was named the tournament MVP. Moses
caught all 36 innings played and threw out 14 base runners.
Taking the mound during the tournament were Aaron Amaral, Kyle
Buchan, Bryan Kobylka, Robbie Heron and Ryan Donahue.
Amaral pitched a total of nine innings and did not allow a run.
Defensively, the Breakers were led by second baseman Randy Guite,
centerfielder James Miller, outfielder Johnny McCarthy and outfielder
Jamie Martin.
The Breakers split their qualification games on Saturday, then
came back to win all three of their games played on Sunday.
In a big semifinal win, the Breakers downed the OC Bandits in
eight innings, 5-3.
Guite preserved a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning when he threw out
a Bandits runner at the plate.
In the eighth inning, Martin’s double cleared loaded bases and
gave the Breakers a 5-1 edge.
As a team, the Breakers batted .357 in the tournament and had an
on base percentage of .444.
