Sponge Bobs take Irvine Memorial tournament
The Sponge Bobs, a girls’ Under-12 Gold All-Star team out of AYSO
Region 117, won three matches last weekend to claim their division
championship at the Irvine Memorial Soccer Tournament.
In the title match, the Sponge Bobs and Porterville United played
a seesaw match that ended in a 2-2 tie.
By posting an overall record of 3-0-1, the Sponge Bobs, coached by
Dale Hensley and Ed Schroeder, was able to finish the tournament as
the only unbeaten team in their bracket.
Sam Strom and Erika Longoria each scored in the title match for
the Sponge Bobs.
They opened the tournament with a 3-2 win over the Woodland Hills
Blackhawks as Alison Hensley netted two goals and Haley Townsend
scored another.
Townsend scored the winning goal in the second match as the Sponge
Bobs overcame a tough Rancho Santa Margarita team, 2-1.
In their third match, the Sponge Bobs routed the El Toro Fire,
5-0, with Melody Sainz getting the shutout in goal.
