The Black Thunder overcame a two-run deficit in the Huntington Beach

Girls Softball 12-and-under championship game and went on to defeat

the Mambas, 4-3.

The Mambas controlled a 2-0 lead through four innings of play but

in the fifth, Black Thunder came up with a two-out rally that

produced three runs and a 3-2 lead.

Heidi Chappel doubled in Alysa Breen for the first run. Following

a Meghan White single, Lena Smith delivered a two-run double to give

Black Thunder its first lead.

Black Thunder extended its lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh

when White tripled and scored on Smith’s second double of the

contest.

The Mambas retaliated in their final at-bat when Erika Congelliere

hit a leadoff triple and later scored to make it a 4-3 game. That

rally ended when Chappel struck out one batter and got two others to

line out to end the game.

White went three for three with two runs scored, Chappel had two

hits and pitched all seven innings to get the victory, Smith finished

with three RBI, Elise Nordin doubled and Brittany Rapose singled for

Black Thunder.

Also contributing to the Black Thunder’s title drive were Amy

Nunez, Lauren Phillips, Vanessa Zabala, Macey Clinton, Tanya Winger

and Amanda Nicholaou.

For the Mambas, Kristen Mendez went three for four with a double,

Rebecca Sass had two hits and scored twice and Alex Iorfino and

Amanda Horowitz each singled.

Congelliere threw a complete game for the Mambas.
