Maosi to play in All-Star game

Marina High infielder Tonya Maosi has been selected to play in the

2003 North vs. South Orange County All-Star Softball game on June 9,

Soroptimist International of Brea/La Habra has announced.

Maosi, a senior, was one of 15 players named to the South squad

and is the only player out of the Sunset League to play in the game.

The North vs. South All-Star game will be played at Brea Olinda

High, at 789 Wildcat Way in Brea.

Tickets are priced at $6 for adults and $4 for children. For more

Former Ocean View star finalist for honor

Leah Gulla, a former standout at Ocean View High, has been named

as one of 10 finalists by Softball West magazine for its 2003

collegiate player of the year award.

Gulla is a senior at the University of Oklahoma. She leads the

fourth-ranked Sooners in team batting average, hits, doubles, RBIs,

total bases and home runs, with eight.

Heading into regional play, Gulla held a .393 batting average, had

42 hits -- among them, eight doubles -- 37 RBIs and 74 total bases.

Gulla is one of two former local athletes in the running for the

award. The other is Lovieanne Jung, formerly of Fountain Valley High

and now a senior shortstop for top-ranked Arizona.

The collegiate player of the year finalists announcement came on

the eve of today’s start of the 2003 College Softball World Series

taking place in Oklahoma City.

Kerry ranks high at Jr. Olympics

Huntington Beach’s Jimmy Kerry placed 23rd overall out of 209

youngsters who competed in the 12-13 Division at the Jr. Olympic

Gymnastics National Competition held in Savanna, Ga.

Kerry, who trains at New Hope Academy of Gymnastics in Fountain

Valley, was the alternate on the Region 1 All-Star team.

Kerry’s competition score only counted as an individual score and

was not compiled into the All-Star team’s overall point total, as all

six members of the squad competed.

Kerry is a seventh-grade pupil at Dwyer Middle School.

Basketball camp dates at OCC set

Local youngsters are invited to take part in two summer basketball

camps being offered at Orange Coast College.

The camps will be held June 16 through 19 and June 23 through 26

at the school gymnasium.

They are open to boys and girls between the ages of nine and 17.

The cost per camp is $80 per person.
