Oilers, Seahawks on to final four
Sunset League champion Huntington Beach and Golden West League winner
Ocean View have earned final four berths in their respective CIF
Southern Section divisions.
The Oilers eliminated St. John Bosco from the Division I playoffs
with an 11-15, 15-4, 15-7, 9-15, 13-15 quarterfinal victory on the
Oilers’ home floor.
The Oilers used a balanced attack to move on to a semifinal match
against top-ranked San Clemente.
Kenny Markwardt had another big game with 22 kills, Brandon
McLaughlin had 18 and Eric Eastman finished with 14 and setter Brock
Boyce helped keep the Braves off-balance.
Ocean View advanced in Division III play following a 15-8, 15-11,
5-15, 15-10 win at Cajon.
Outside hitters Justin Roth and Jeff Wilson paced the Seahawks
with 21 and 15 kills, respectively.
The win was the 20th of the season for Ocean View, now 20-5
overall.
“I thought Cajon was extremely athletic and fortunately for us, we
made less mistakes than they did,” said Ocean View coach Jimmy Harris
who noted that the trip to the CIF semifinals is a first for the
program.
At the CIF-SS tennis Sectional matches, Edison’s doubles duo of
Ryan Malawy and Thomas Shubert advanced out of tournament play held
at Whittier Narrows.
Malawy, a junior, and the freshman Shubert will compete Friday in
the CIF-SS Individuals round of 16 at SeaCliff Tennis Club.
The Sunset League doubles champions had a first round bye. In
second round action they defeated Valencia’s David Fogelsong and
Eddie Manio of the Foothill League 6-1, 6-1. Next they played and
defeated Crescenta Valley’s Ryan Chang and Eric Ueo of the Pacific
League 6-1, 6-1.
They now move on to the round of 16 and Edison coach Nick Friendt
says the duo “realistically has a shot of winning the whole thing” at
Friday’s Sweet 16.
“Ryan and Thomas have been unbelievable all year for us,” he said.
“The reason that we’ve won as a team is because of their spectacular
play and our team effort. Now, these guys are playing not only for
Edison High School, but for themselves. They have the opportunity to
do something that’s never been done in Edison Boys Tennis.”
Last fall, Edison’s tennis program was represented by the doubles
team of seniors Jessica Boyer and Kelly Iwanabe at the CIF-SS final
round of 16 at SeaCliff.
In CIF baseball, Edison opened the Division I playoffs with a 3-1
home win over Claremont.
Robbie Blauer drove in the winning run -- the last of two scored
in the fifth inning -- to lift Sunset League champion Edison, now
24-4.
David Huff got the pitching win on two hits with 11 strikeouts.
The win put the senior at 10-1 on the season.
Golden West League co-champion Ocean View was a 3-2 first-round
winner of visiting Troy in a Division III matchup.
The Seahawks’ offense was sparked by home runs hit by Derek Walsh
and Phil Hann.
Walsh hit a solo shot in the first inning to give Ocean View a 1-0
lead, and Hann upped the advantage to 2-0 with a solo homer in the
third.
Senior Grant Theophilus got the pitching win -- his eighth of the
year -- in a complete-game effort.
Jacob Luque made Marina a first-round winner in the Division I
baseball playoffs.
The senior’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning
separated the Vikings from visiting Rancho Cucamonga and sent Marina
to a 2-1 victory.
The win was the 20th of the season for Marina. Winning pitcher Wes
Etheridge improved his mark to 7-3 and J.J. Valicenti, who entered in
the seventh inning, got the save.
In CIF softball, Marina’s season came to an end when host El Toro
scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 1-0 victory
in a first-round Division I contest.
