Improvers improving Costa Mesa?
Although it is unfair to characterize a group based solely on the
words and actions of an individual member, I believe most people
(including Lolita Harper) are not wrong in judging the Improver’s key
agendas.
Quite often, the core members of the Improvers have unashamedly
revealed themselves to be extremely conservative, ranging from
anti-immigration to homophobic beliefs.
I believe most people find it rather difficult accepting the true
intentions of the Improvers. A few weeks ago, an Improver petitioned
council to add a “no soccer” clause to a community park sign. Are
unbiased residents suppose to believe that this Improver was actually
looking out for the best interests of the city, or simply trying to
exclude a certain race from playing there? Well, most of us would
have to be blind not to recognize the real agenda behind some of the
Improvers’ plans.
Perhaps it would be better for the Improvers to detach themselves
from some of their more extreme members. But then again, what unites
them is not a spirit to better the community, but a relentless zeal
to transform Costa Mesa into their own myopic vision.
If the Improvers want more respect, they need to earn it --
embracing all citizens, regardless of race, class, and sexuality
would be a welcomed change. And remember, actions speak louder than
words.
