Going for Host of the Coast
About 2,000 people attended the grand opening activities of the
Balboa Bay Club on Wednesday, enjoying tours of the new $65-million
facility, beverages and bountiful food.
At the noon ribbon-cutting ceremony for city VIPs and the media,
it was John Wayne’s voice that led the attendees in the Pledge of
Allegiance and students from the Orange County High School of the
Arts who provided the entertainment throughout the resort. At the
evening reception for club members, the most popular place was Duke’s
Place, where nightly entertainment and dancing will be featured for
the public and club members.
The 7,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom was well received with its
warm colors, high ceilings and 22-foot wide chandler. For most of the
past 50 years, the club was the Host of the Coast -- hosting events
for business and variety of charities and civic groups. In recent
years, that role has been filled by the Hyatt Newporter and Newport
Center Marriott. With the new facilities and the great staff, I
suspect the Balboa Bay Club will reclaim the title, Host of the
Coast!
STUDENTS OF THE YEAR
The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor has honored as Students of the
Year Rachel Malkin and Raymond Stockstill from Corona del Mar High
School, Emily Abbott and John Santos from Costa Mesa High School;
Melissa Ross and Evan Gordon from Newport Harbor High School, and
Lindsay Freeman and Aranth Varma from Estancia High School.
Chairman Bob Klein described the Youth of the Year program and
then asked each high school counselor to introduce the students from
his or her school, listing their many accomplishments. Each honoree
received a plaque and a check in the amount of $500 from club
President Rick Harris. Congratulations.
