The Laguna Beach High boys’ volleyball team will begin play tonight
in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division II
playoffs.
The Breakers host El Modena of the Century League in a match
scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Dugger Gym.
Laguna is the No. 2 seed out of the Pacific Coast League.
The Breakers are making their 30th consecutive CIF playoff
appearance. In its previous 29 years of postseason competition,
Laguna has posted a 63-24 record and has reached the quarterfinal
round or beyond on 22 occasions.
El Modena is making its ninth trip to the playoffs. The Vanguards,
who finished fourth in the Century standings and are an a-large entry
to the playoffs, are 2-8 in previous playoff matches.
Should Laguna defeat El Modena tonight, the Breakers would advance
to Tuesday’s second-round action against the winner of Thursday
night’s Villa Park-West Valley match.
Quarterfinal matches are scheduled for May 23, the final four will
be played on May 28 and the Division II final will be played at 4
p.m. on Saturday, May 31, at Cypress College.
In other CIF Southern Section boys’ volleyball news, Laguna was
ranked eighth in the final regular season Division II poll that was
released on Monday.
The Breakers were one of three Pacific Coast League teams ranked
in the final Top 10 poll: Corona del Mar was ranked second and
University came in at No. 10.
Valencia of Valencia again was the top-ranked team in the division
and could possibly face Laguna in a playoff quarterfinal match.
