Newport-Mesa receives road money
Costa Mesa and Newport Beach received Measure M allocations for
local street and road projects from the Orange County Transportation
Authority this week.
Costa Mesa received almost $6.5 million, which will go toward
bicycle trails, improving intersections and widening the southbound
onramp of the San Diego Freeway to Sunflower Avenue. Newport Beach
got about $1.4 million for one project -- road widening between
Bayview Way and MacArthur Boulevard.
Irvine Co. honors 20 students for leadership
The Irvine Co. is honoring 30 high school seniors who have
demonstrated qualities of a community leader with student leadership
awards.
The $2,000 scholarships, which are part of the company’s Investing
in Education 2003 Awards Program, went to college-bound students with
a GPA higher than 3.0 from one of 15 schools in the Orange County
area.
Eight of those students were selected as semifinalists and will
receive an additional $1,000. Lindsay Freeman from Estancia High
School and Hilary Havens from Costa Mesa High School were among them.
Of those semifinalists, four finalists will receive an additional
$7,000 in scholarship funds.
The winners will be announced May 22.
