WET AND WILD WITH ROCKIN’ FIG
The National Scholastic Surfing Assn’s Interscholastic State
Championships went off in some nice weather and surf down at Church’s
in San Clemente Saturday. A solid combination of a southern- hemi
swell filling in and west wind swell gave the surfers some 3- to
5-foot clean conditions to work with, nothing like the stormy
conditions that were dealt the first time around forcing a
postponement about a month ago.
The San Clemente High School Tritons took advantage in their home
turf sending five surfers to the six-man final. Huntington’s Chris
Waring was the lone surfer not from San Clemente to make it, placing
fourth. San Clemente also took the top spots in longboarding with
Tommy Witt winning. Colleen Mehlberg won the girls’ division. Making
the final in longboards from Huntington were Michael Jorgensen from
Edison in fourth place and Anthony Duarte from Huntington Beach High
School in fifth place.
Also Edison’s Kris Espinoza was sixth in bodyboarding. So final
standings; San Clemente’s A team 149, San Clemente’s B team 114,
Huntington Beach 94, San Dieguito 79, Carlsbad 77, Edison 58 and
Marina came in 15th with 22 points.
In College action, Oceanside’s Mira Costa took a close one over UC
San Diego 99 to 94., with University of San Diego 79 points, San
Diego State 74, UC Santa Barbara 72 and our local boys at Cal State
Long Beach with 61.
Huntington’s Justin Hugron won the longboarding for Cal State Long
Beach with some fancy footwork.
The Middle School Championships that were postponed also, but were
held March 29th at Goldenwest Street in Surf City. San Clemente’s
Bernice Ayer won a first state title over cross-town rival
Shorecliffs, 100 to 86. Dwyer came in third with 78 points, Cabrillo
with 74 and Sowers with 69.
