UCI neurobiology chair will discuss memory
The Irvine Health Foundation and UC Irvine’s Center for the
Neurobiology of Learning and Memory will present Thomas J. Carew,
chair of the UCI Department of Neurobiology, as part of its ninth
annual lecture series on brain, learning and memory.
The lecture on May 20 will feature the topic “The Molecular
Architecture of Memory.”
Carew will use the aplysia, a sea animal from the California
coast, to illustrate the molecular machinery that creates memories.
The program will begin 7:30 p.m. May 20 at the Irvine Barclay
Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive, Irvine.

Monahan makes Mayor’s Award monthly
Newly elected mayor Gary Monahan will now present the Mayor’s
Award on a monthly basis.
The city is accepting nominations on a continual basis for the
award. This award recognizes people in the community who have made a
difference by performing an outstanding act, service or deed.
Award recipients are honored with the presentation of a Mayor’s
Award certificate, recognition letters from local elected officials
and other special gifts.
The award presentation generally occurs at the first City Council
meeting of every month, which is the first Monday.
Letters submitted should include the name, address and phone
number of the nominee, as well as a brief statement as to why the
person deserves recognition. The letter should also note the name,
address and phone number of the nominator.
The city’s Web site, www.costa-mesa.ca.us, includes a Mayor’s
Award Nomination Form.
