Capturing the essence of Laguna Beach with a postcard is something
tourists have been doing since the early 1900s, but a postcard 7 by 5
feet in size is a different story. Artists will compete to show their
vision of Laguna in postcard form and have their work be part of a
mural on Ocean Avenue.
Artists who are interested in the competition should take
advantage of the wonderful collection of vintage postcards at the
library and the historical society for inspiration and ideas.
The competition will consist of four separate murals and will be
displayed at 364 Ocean Ave., which is a highly-visible area Downtown.
“The Arts Commission selected the site as an important artery into
the city,” arts coordinator Sian Poeschl said. “With increased use of
public transport and encouraging visitors to utilize the free trolley
service the bus depot site is highly visible and in need of
enhancement.”
The theme needs to be adhered to with imagery from aspects unique
to Laguna.
“The four murals, painted on canvas, will celebrate the uniqueness
of the city through postcards referencing the ‘Past, Present and
Future’ of the Laguna Beach,” Poeschl said. “This proposed Public Art
installation will not only depict our city but will also convey a
sense of civic pride to all who visit.” An honorarium of $2,250 per
winning mural will be rewarded. The deadline for submission is 4 p.m.
June 16 to the Community Services Department at 515 Forest Ave.
