Breakers take care of Titans

Doubles play was the strong suit for the Laguna Beach High boys’

tennis team Tuesday in its Pacific Coast League home match with

Tesoro.

The Breakers won all but one of nine singles sets and went on to

defeat the Titans, 11-7.

The win moved Laguna to 2-5 in league play and 9-10 overall.

The top doubles team of Jeff Ferguson and Eric Tran won by scores

of 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, the team of Ivan Kovacevic and

Kyle Paxton swept by identical 6-2 scores.

Michael Codini and Jeremy McKiernan, at No. 3 doubles, dropped

their first set, 2-6, but came back to win their next two, 6-4, 6-0.

The Breakers also gained two points in singles play with wins by

No. 1 Andrew Ghenender and Lincoln Berger.

In boys’ volleyball, Laguna was a 15-11, 15-3, 15-6 winner Tuesday

over visiting Tesoro.

The victory clinched no worse than third-place in the PCL

standings and earned the schools a CIF playoff berth for the 30th

consecutive year.

In previous play, Laguna rallied to defeat host Northwood in four

games, 15-9, 11-5, 15-13, 15-13 and swept Calvary Chapel, 15-8, 15-9,

15-9.

Against Northwood, Matt Anderson finished with 25 kills, Trey

Chapel had 15 and Talan Torriero finished with 11.

Chapel had 14 digs, Nick Aronoff had 13, Jason Kimball had 11 and

Anderson 10.

Aronoff also led the team in set assists with 47.

In nonleague play, Laguna finished 21st among 32 teams at the

Redondo Tournament. Along the way, the Breakers defeated Taft, the

No. 3 team among L.A. City Schools.

In baseball play, Tesoro edged visiting Laguna, 8-7 on Tuesday.

That loss came on the heels of a 4-1 victory at Northwood.

Jonathon Cedeno went the distance and improved his record to 3-1.

In softball action played Tuesday, visiting Laguna was blanked by

Northwood, 7-0.
