Burlingham named to All-American team

Newport Harbor High senior Amy Burlingham leaves little doubt about

the level she has risen to.

For the second consecutive year, the University of Texas-bound

soccer player has been selected to Parade Magazine’s 2003

All-American High School Girls Soccer Team.

“I was completely shocked,” Burlingham said. “It is a huge honor

to be selected out of so many high schools in the nation.”

Burlingham’s father, Jim, gave her the news.

The three-time All-Sea View League first-team selection and

All-CIF honoree during her sophomore and junior seasons, Burlingham

missed a couple of games during the season to play for the under-19

United States national team, which she trained with last week in

Chula Vista.

“I didn’t devote as much time to the high school season this year,

so that was disappointing,” Burlingham said.

Newport finished 5-10-7, 3-4-3 in league and missed the CIF

Southern Section Division I playoffs this season.

The previous year, Newport rolled to its best postseason in girls

soccer, earning a berth in the CIF Division II quarterfinals.

“She is a great player who will be missed at Newport,” Newport

girls soccer coach Jason Sorrell said. “She has done well for

herself.”

Burlingham will rejoin her teammates on the national team for the

Adidas Cup in Houston at the end of the month. The U.S. will field

its under-19 national team, along with two all-star teams at the

event, which will include competition from Germany, China, France and

Canada.

In early August, Burlingham will travel to the Dominican Republic

to compete with the national team in the Pan Am Games.

She is also part of the So Cal Blues club soccer team, which will

play in the state quarterfinals this weekend in San Bernardino.

Not only a star on the soccer field, Burlingham is also a

stronghold on the Sailors’ track and field team. She returned to the

track this season after a two-year absence because of a busy soccer

schedule and has made her presence known.

She placed first in the 200 and 400 meters at the league

preliminaries earlier this week and will race in the finals Friday.

Burlingham will also join Elda Hernandez, Kiley Hall and Amy

Klippert in the finals of the 400 and 1,600 relays Friday.
