Oilers win pair, eye Esperanza

Huntington Beach outlasted Fountain Valley in a key Sunset League
match, 7-15, 15-9, 16-14, 14-16, 15-10.
Kenny Markwardt paced the Oilers with 22 kills in a match that
lasted more than two hours.
The Oilers came back to earn a hard-fought, 13-15, 15-0, 15-13, 13-15, 15-10 over last-place Los Alamitos.
Markwardt again led in kills with 26 and Eric Eastman added 19.
Edison took league-leading Esperanza to the limit but the visiting
Aztecs, behind 43 kills and seven blocks by Jayson Jablonsky, rallied
to pull out an 11-15, 14-16, 15-8, 15-8, 15-6 victory.
Marina, meanwhile, fell to Esperanza, 10-15, 9-15, 8-15, and
Fountain Valley, 15-8, 13-15, 9-15, 15-7, 14-16.
In a key Sunset match, Huntington Beach hosts Esperanza on Friday.
Ocean View moved a step closer to securing the Golden West League
title by surviving Orange in five games, 13-15, 16-14, 18-16, 12-15,
15-13. Justin Roth led the Seahawks with 38 kills and 24 assists.
The Seahawks added Westminster to their list of victims following
a 15-6, 15-6, 15-9 victory over the Lions. Danny Thompson’s 10 kills
paced host Ocean View.
In baseball action, Ocean View derailed host Estancia, 13-3.
The Seahawks used a 12-run inning to take control of the game and
racked up 13 hits overall, led by Garrett Leon’s three singles.
Starter Phillip Hann got the win to improve to 6-1.
The win was the sixth in as many Golden West League outings for
Ocean View.
Edison maintained its grip on first place in the Sunset League
race following a pair of triumphs over Fountain Valley.
During the Chargers’ 11-7 victory in the team’s first meeting of
the week, an 11-hit attack was led by Garrett Young who doubled twice
and drove in two runs.
Tommy Palica, the third of three Edison pitchers, recorded the win
to improve his record to 3-0.
Edison followed that win with a 15-2 rout of the Barons. Young
homered, scored twice and had four RBIs, Nate Mitani homered to start
the game, Matt Cline singled twice, had two RBIs and scored three
runs and John-Paul Moreno tripled, singled and scored three runs.
Senior David Huff ran his record to 7-1 by throwing five,
scoreless innings.
Marina stayed a game back of Edison in the chase for the Sunset
title by beating Huntington Beach twice.
In a 4-0 victory, Daric Barton’s two-run home run in the third
inning accounted for Marina’s first runs of the game. Wes Etheridge
went the distance and ran his record to 5-2.
In another shutout, this one by a 9-0 score, Jason Jordan matched
Barton with a two-run homer. J.J. Valicenti got the pitching win and
improved to 7-1.
In softball, Ocean View junior Jennifer Shafizadeh hit a two-run
home run in the first inning to propel the Seahawks to an 11-3 win at
Estancia.
The Seahawks had staked to a 6-0 lead through 1 1/2 innings
before Estancia finally got on the scoreboard.
Junior Jerian Isfeld started on the mound and recorded the
pitching win.
Jessica Marlow’s two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth
inning spelled the difference in Edison’s 2-0 home victory over
Huntington Beach.
Stacy Birk went the distance and won her 12th game of the season.
