Costa Mesa girls cap 6-0 league campaign

* TRACK AND FIELD: Senior Rhondi Naff tripled to lead a dominating
effort by the Costa Mesa High girls track and field team, which
defeated Golden West League visitor Santa Ana, 95-31, at Orange Coast
College Wednesday.
With the victory, the Mustangs complete an unbeaten league
dual-meet season. Sharon Day (800 meters, high jump), Beverly Aina
(shot put, discus) and Toshia Bryant (100, 200) won two events each
for Costa Mesa. The Mustangs also won both relays, which included a
pairing of the Bjelland sisters, Christine and Tracy, and the Day
sisters, Sharon and Jasmine, in the 1,600 relay (4:11.2). Christine Bjelland also won the 1,600, while Kyla Flores (3,200), Vicki Pham
(100 hurdles) and Cassey Brick (300 hurdles) also won.
On the boys side, Costa Mesa (2-4) lost, 85-50. Carlos Ibarra won
the 3,200 (10:18.5), while Luke Sapolu won the discus and Keola
Asuega topped the field in the shot put.
OCC’s Murray commits
* RECRUITING: Sophomore Lauren Murray, who helped the Orange Coast
College women’s basketball team win the state championship in March,
will continue her career at Concordia University, OCC Coach Mike
Thornton announced Wednesday.
Murray, a 6-foot forward who averaged eight points and nearly
seven rebounds, will join OCC sophomore point guard Nancy Hatsushi at
the Irvine-based NAIA Division I school. She chose the Eagles over
San Diego State.
OCC was a combined 55-16 during Murray’s tenure.
Estancia tops Seahawks
* SWIMMING: Estancia High’s Britta Pitti, Marilyn Reich and Jayme
Fay were the lone individual winners, but the Eagles still managed a
fairly one-sided 101-67 Golden West League girls swimming victory
over Ocean View Wednesday at Westminster High.
Pitti won the 200-yard freestyle (2:28.33), Reich won the 200
individual medley (2:41.35) and Fay won the 500 free. The trio was
also on one of the Eagles’ two victorious relays.
Estancia completes its league dual-meet season with a 3-3 record.
In the boys meet, Estancia’s Chad Kunert and Sean Goodman each won
two events as the Eagles (6-4,2-5) concluded its Golden Wsest League
dual-meet season with an 84-79 victory.
Kunert won the 200 free (2:04.19) and 500 free (5:30.83) while
Goodman won the 200 IM (2:30.06) and 100 butterfly (1:09.66).
Paul Collier won the 100 free (58.20) and teamed with Goodman,
Kunert and Frank Gamboa to win the 200 free relay (1:48.24).

Frohling keys CdM win
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team rallied from a
two-stroke deficit after nine holes to claim a 387-390 nonleague win
in an 18-hole match against Cypress completed Wednesday at the
Newport Beach Country Club.
CdM’s Tim Frohling was the 18-hole medalist (74), including
1-under 34 Wednesday.
Nick Sherman shot 33 Wednesday, while Alex Chikovani (78), Brad
Chamberlin (83), Rob Ury (80), Ben Tilsen (84) and Zack Rabinovich
(83) also helped CdM improve to 13-4.
Tesoro surprises CdM
* SWIMMING: Corona del Mar High junior Kim McKay won two
individual events, including an automatic CIF-qualifying time of
5:24.02 in the 500-yard freestyle, but visiting Tesoro earned an
82-81 Pacific Coast League girls swimming upset Wednesday.
An early relay disqualification rendered four Sea Kings out for
the meet, severely depleting the lineup.
McKay also won the 100 butterfly (1:04.17), while Brittany Bowlus
(50 and 100 free in 25.57 and 56.09, respectively), Alexa Shue (200
individual medley in 2:15.36), Katya Eadington (200 free in 2:11.95),
Jordan Anae (100 backstroke in 1:03.66) and Tamua Anae (100
breaststroke in 1:13.40) were also individual winners for CdM (2-1-1
in league and still within striking distance for the league title).

Vaqs handle Mustangs
* BASEBALL: Visiting Rancho Alamitos broke a 2-2 tie with three
runs in the fifth and went on to an 11-4 nonleague baseball victory
over Costa Mesa Wednesday.
Adam Beltran went 3 for 5, while Robert Rodriguez, Alex Pisarski
and Gary Gonzalez also had two hits apiece for the Mustangs (8-12).
Rodriguez drove in a run for Costa Mesa, which returns to Golden West
League play Friday at Orange.

Eagles’ Gleason shines
* BASEBALL: Estancia High sophomore Ryan Gleason doubled in a run
and pitched 1 2/3innings of quality relief to highlight the Eagles’
8-1 Golden West League loss to visiting Saddleback Wednesday.
Gleason’s double plated Matt Ronquillo in the sixth to allow the
hosts (3-16, 1-7 in league) to avert the shutout. Ronquillo reached
on a single.
Gleason took the mound with two outs in the sixth and left runners
stranded at second and third. He then worked a scoreless seventh.
Tony Ippolito also singled to round out the Eagles’ three-hit
attack against the Roadrunners, who improved to 9-8, 5-4 in league.

Sailors lose tiebreaker
* GOLF: Newport Harbor High and Los Alamitos finished tied at 396,
but the Griffins earned the nonleague victory by virtue of its sixth
player in an 18-hole match completed Wednesday.
Newport’s Rhett Palmer (76) shared medalist honors with Los Al’s
Ryan Murphy, while Brandon Sowers (77), Davis Pemstein (77), Michael
Benvenuti (79) and Michael Vacker (79) also scored for the Sailors
(5-10).
Palmer shot 1-under 35 Wednesday.
Eagles drop the ball
* SOFTBALL: Estancia High starting pitcher Evelyn Flores was
victimized by 11 errors and visiting Saddleback prevailed, 10-3, in a
Golden West League softball game Wednesday.
Flores struck out six in six innings, allowing six hits for the
Eagles (10-7, 2-6 in league).
Flores went 1 for 3 with an RBI and two runs while Muriel Mason
went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Estancia.

* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team built a 4-0
lead after three innings, but Golden State Athletic Conference host
Point Loma Nazarene rallied for a 5-4 win Wednesday.
The Crusaders (29-18, 16-12) scored three runs in the fourth, tied
it in the sixth and went ahead when Jud Richards scored on a wild
pitch.
Jason Searle went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored to lead
the Lions (24-26, 13-15)
