Drug bust has unexpected ending

Laguna Beach narcotics detectives seized two semiautomatic

weapons, two pounds of flour and 100 pounds of ceramic floor tile

last week in a drug bust they had been planning for months.

Detectives set up a deal to buy 100 pounds of marijuana and two

pounds of methamphetamine at 10:05 p.m. April 10 from four L.A.-area

men, two of whom allegedly admitted to being gang members. Jorge

Garay, 18, of Compton; Alejandro Moreno, 20, of Commerce; Fabian

Lopez, 20, of Compton; and Alberto Victoria, 35, of Los Angeles,

intended to rob their buyers, but were arrested before they could,

Sgt. Jason Kravetz said.

Kravetz said detectives expected to find the large,

cellophane-wrapped package in the suspects’ car full of marijuana and

methamphetamine, but after the men were apprehended, police found

only tiles and flour.

The men were arrested on suspicion of sales in lieu of drugs,

offering to sell marijuana, offering to sell methamphetamine and

conspiracy to commit a crime. Garay and Victoria were arrested on

suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime with a firearm. One had a

gun on his hip, and the other was sitting on a semi-automatic in the

car, Kravetz said.

Kravetz said detectives and Laguna Beach police officers

apprehended the four at 600 N. Coast Highway, Kravetz said, and the

suspects were arrested without a struggle.

Police said Garay admitted to being part of a Compton gang, while

Lopez said he belonged to a gang based in Paramount.
